Yes—an old laptop can share files with family devices on a home network, but whether it is a good server depends on its operating-system support, storage, security, backup plan and power use. A shared folder is not a backup, and a laptop that still turns on is not necessarily safe to leave connected to the network.
The title’s two-year claim is a personal reliability claim, not something that can be established for an unspecified laptop. Without details such as its model, operating system, uptime, drives and maintenance, it would be misleading to present that duration as a verified test or a promise about other machines. Here is what to check before relying on an older computer for family files.

What a family file server does—and what it does not do
Microsoft describes Server Message Block (SMB) as “a network file sharing and data fabric protocol.” In practical terms, an SMB share lets compatible devices on a network access folders hosted by another computer. Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux and Android support SMB-based file sharing in some form, but the exact setup and available features differ by device, operating-system version and configuration.

It must be powered on and reachable when someone needs a file. If it sleeps, loses network connectivity or needs maintenance, access may stop until the problem is fixed. Decide whether your family needs occasional access, or expects the files to be available at all times.

Check the laptop before putting family files on it
Confirm that its operating system still receives security updates
Support status matters more than the laptop’s age alone. Microsoft says Windows 10 free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. A laptop still running Windows 10 therefore needs a suitable migration plan; continued operation does not mean continued security support. Check the support status of the specific operating system and version you intend to use, and do not treat an unsupported system as a safe permanent file server.
Assess the storage and the consequences of failure
Consider what is stored on the laptop, how much space the family needs and what happens if its internal drive fails or the entire machine is damaged, lost or stolen. Sensitive files deserve particular care: encryption can help protect data if someone gains access to the device or its storage, while a separate backup helps recover files after loss or damage. Those are different protections, and one does not replace the other.

- AI-Powered Photo Album: Automatically organizes your photos by recognizing faces, scenes, objects, and locations. It can also instantly remove duplicates, freeing up storage space and saving you time.
Plan for updates and maintenance
A server still needs a supported operating system, security updates and occasional attention. Decide who in the household will install updates, check that file sharing still works afterward and notice when the machine is offline. If nobody will maintain it, the setup may be less dependable than its low purchase cost suggests.

Keep file sharing on the trusted home network
Create an authenticated share for the people who need it, and give each account only the access it needs. Avoid an open, unauthenticated folder for family data. Microsoft recommends blocking inbound SMB traffic on TCP port 445 at the internet-facing firewall. Do not expose the laptop’s SMB service directly to the public internet as a casual way to reach files from outside the house.

Remote access requires a deliberate, supported design. Microsoft documents SMB over QUIC for particular Windows configurations, including Windows 11 clients and Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition file servers on Azure Local. That is not a general-purpose feature to assume is available on an old laptop. If remote access is important, verify that the exact server and client versions support the method you plan to use rather than opening SMB to the internet.
SMB signing helps protect against data tampering and relay attacks. Microsoft notes that defaults and availability vary by version; Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 require inbound and outbound SMB signing by default. Do not weaken signing or other security settings just to try to improve transfer speed. Performance depends on the hardware and network, and security settings can affect it.

Set up an independent backup and test recovery
A server copy is not a separate backup: if the laptop is compromised, stolen, damaged or its drive fails, the shared files may be affected too. Keep another copy on a separately stored external hard drive or use a suitable cloud-backup service. Microsoft notes that external or network drives can suit people with limited internet access or large collections of files, while cloud backup can make files convenient to access across devices. CISA also recommends backing up data to a secure external drive or a properly vetted cloud service.
Choose a destination and schedule that match how often the family changes files. Then verify that the backup actually contains the files you expect and test restoring a file. A drive plugged into the server but never populated with a current copy does not provide a usable backup. Nor should a second partition on the same laptop be treated as protection against the laptop’s loss or failure.

Account for electricity and availability
A laptop that stays on for overnight file access or backups uses electricity, but there is no reliable universal cost figure for an unspecified machine. Consumption depends on the particular laptop, its workload and settings, and the time it remains on. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends using built-in computer power-management practices; it also notes that a monitor can be turned off when a networked computer must remain on overnight.
To estimate your own running cost, measure the laptop’s actual power draw over representative use with an appropriate meter, then apply your electricity rate and the hours it runs. Treat the result as an estimate for that machine and usage pattern, not a typical cost for all old laptops. Check power settings carefully so that energy-saving behavior does not put the computer to sleep when the family expects to reach its files.
Decide whether the tradeoffs suit your household
Reusing a laptop can avoid buying a dedicated device, but it also makes the household responsible for updates, access controls, backups and troubleshooting. Compare the options against what family members actually need rather than assuming that a laptop, a dedicated storage device and cloud storage offer identical service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Availability: Does the computer need to remain on, and can the family tolerate interruptions for sleep, updates or repairs?
- Security: Is the operating system supported, is the share authenticated, and is access kept off the public internet?
- Recovery: Is there a separate, current backup, and has restoring a file been tested?
- Compatibility: Can the household’s actual phones and computers connect with the available SMB configuration?
- Ongoing effort and cost: Who will maintain the server, and what does its measured electricity use cost compared with the alternatives?
If those checks have satisfactory answers, an old laptop may be a practical way to share files locally. If the machine depends on an unsupported operating system, lacks an independent backup or would need SMB exposed to the internet, address those risks before trusting it with important family data.
