Can an Old Android Phone Work as a NAS? What to Check Before You Try

An old Android phone can be a file-sharing experiment, not a guaranteed NAS replacement. Check USB host support, portable storage, server-app behavior, and security before relying on it.

Yes, an old Android phone may be able to share files on your local network, but the available evidence does not establish a universal, dependable phone-to-NAS setup. Treat it as a device-specific experiment: confirm that your phone can host USB storage, that a suitable file-server app works on your Android version, and that the service stays running. If you need reliable, always-on storage, a router with a documented USB-sharing feature is a more clearly established option.

What a phone-based NAS can—and cannot—mean

A phone connected to portable USB storage might serve files to other devices on the same network if its hardware, Android version, and server software support the arrangement. That is different from having a NAS appliance with established uptime, performance, access controls, and backup behavior. The reviewed evidence does not establish speed, reliability, or backup comparisons for phone-based NAS setups, so those should not be assumed.

It also does not identify a current Android app that can be recommended with verified device and version support. Before relying on any app, check its current Android compatibility, the permissions it requests, whether it supports the sharing protocol you need, how it authenticates users, and whether it continues running in the background on your phone.

Keep USB storage portable; do not adopt it as internal storage

Android distinguishes portable external storage from adoptable storage. Adoptable media is formatted and encrypted for use with one Android device, with its encryption keys stored on that device, according to the Android Open Source Project’s adoptable-storage documentation.

That same guidance says, “In particular, USB devices connected to a phone or tablet should never be considered for adoption.” This warning is about adopting USB storage as Android internal storage; it does not mean Android cannot use USB storage as portable media. For a file-sharing experiment, keep the drive portable rather than trying to make it adopted internal storage.

Check compatibility before connecting a drive

  • USB host support: An OTG adapter can provide a physical connection, but support depends on the phone. A HONOR user guide describes connecting USB storage with an OTG cable for its covered device; it does not confirm that all Android phones support the same setup. Check your phone’s exact specifications or user guide. HONOR’s OTG guidance
  • Storage access: Confirm that Android and the intended file-server app can read and share files from the attached drive in portable-storage mode.
  • Power: A phone may not provide enough power for every attached drive. If the drive does not start or disconnects, check the phone and drive guidance; a powered USB hub may be needed for some combinations, but there is no universal requirement.
  • Physical stability: A loose adapter or cable can interrupt access. Consider whether the phone, adapter, and drive can remain connected where you intend to use them.
  • Background operation: Verify that the selected app remains active when the screen is off and under your phone’s battery-management settings. Behavior is device- and app-specific.

Set it up as a cautious local-network experiment

  1. Check the phone documentation: Look for USB host or OTG support for your exact model and identify any stated limits on connected storage.
  2. Connect the drive in portable mode: Use a compatible OTG adapter and confirm Android can access the files. Do not adopt the USB device as internal storage.
  3. Choose and inspect a file-server app: Verify its current protocol support, Android-version compatibility, authentication options, permissions, maintenance status, and background behavior. The evidence available here does not validate a specific app or provide reliable app-by-app instructions.
  4. Restrict the first test to your local network: Use only files you are comfortable sharing, then check access from another device on the same network. Do not infer that local sharing instructions make internet access safe.
  5. Check what happens after interruptions: Confirm whether the service resumes after the screen locks, the phone restarts, the drive disconnects, or battery management stops the app before treating it as dependable storage.

Protect files stored on external media

Android’s developer security checklist warns that external storage can be removed and modified by other apps in the documented context, and recommends storing only non-sensitive information there. Android Developers’ security checklist makes this a meaningful constraint for a phone-hosted file share: do not assume that an attached drive or server app protects private data by itself.

Review the app’s permissions and authentication, keep the share limited to the people and devices that need it, and avoid exposing the service to the internet. Remote access is a separate configuration and security question; local-network sharing documentation does not establish that remote access is safe.

Phone plus drive or router USB sharing?

Consideration Old phone plus USB storage Supported router with USB sharing
Evidence of a sharing method Possible on compatible hardware with suitable server software; no universal phone-hosted SMB setup is established. TP-Link documents Samba/SMB access to USB storage locally on supported routers.
Hardware and software checks Verify USB host/OTG support, drive access, app compatibility, power, and background operation on the exact phone. Verify that the exact router supports USB storage sharing and the access method you need.
Remote access Not established as safe by local-network sharing evidence. TP-Link documents FTP for remote access; that documentation is not a general security endorsement.
Dependability and performance Comparative speed, uptime, and reliability are not established. Comparative speed, uptime, and reliability are not established.

TP-Link’s instructions describe local Samba access and remote FTP for supported router models, not for Android phones. See TP-Link’s USB storage access instructions. A router is the better-supported direction in this evidence when you want a documented sharing feature, but check the feature set of your exact router rather than assuming every router has it.

When the experiment makes sense

  • Try the phone approach if you already have compatible hardware, want to share non-sensitive files locally, and are willing to verify app behavior and interruptions yourself.
  • Choose a documented alternative if you want a more straightforward local-sharing path and own a router whose manufacturer documents USB storage sharing.
  • Do not treat either option as a backup by itself. The reviewed sources do not establish backup behavior, so keep a separate copy of important files.
