An iPhone keyboard extension can use AI without Full Access when the AI runs on-device and does not need network access or write to the containing app’s shared container. A feature that sends typed text to a remote model needs network access, which Apple treats as an open-access capability; the keyboard must still provide useful input functionality without Full Access.
What Full Access changes
Apple’s Settings label is “Allow Full Access”; its developer documentation calls the capability “open access.” A keyboard requests it by setting RequestsOpenAccess to true in the extension’s Info.plist. That request does not grant permission by itself: the user controls the setting, and the extension can check its current state with UIInputViewController.hasFullAccess. Apple’s open-access configuration guide describes the distinction.

Without Full Access, the keyboard is restricted to its own sandbox, cannot access the network, and can read—but not write—to the containing app’s shared containers. Apple says users know that keystrokes go only to the app currently using the keyboard. With access enabled, the keyboard can use network services, write to a shared container, and send keystrokes or other input events for server-side processing. Those capabilities also bring added responsibility for handling user data.
Which AI designs work without it?
| Design | Where inference happens | Full Access needed? | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device AI | On the iPhone | Not if the feature needs neither network access nor shared-container writes | Confirm framework support and model readiness for the extension’s target OS and devices; provide a fallback. |
| Remote AI API | A developer or provider server | Yes, for network access | Typed text is transmitted for processing, so explain the data flow and limit what is sent. |
| Hybrid | Local first, with optional server processing | Only for the remote enhancement | Keep the local path useful when access is off or the network is unavailable. |
What local AI can do—and what to verify
Apple’s Foundation Models documentation describes on-device language tasks such as summarizing, extracting entities, understanding text, editing or refining text, classification, and creative writing. These capabilities could support keyboard features such as rewriting a text fragment or suggesting a short completion.

- Can't Connect the Bluetooth? Please reset the keyboard and then reconnect the Bluetooth: 1. Turn on the keyboarad; 2. Press and hold the first and the last key at the top row of the keyboard until all indicators start flashing; 3. Bluetooth light flickers quickly, auto entering Bluetooth pairing mode (If not, press Fn + 1 or 2); 4. Search and find "Wireless keyboard".
- Multi-OS Compatible: The keyboard is widely compatible with Android, Windows and iOS devices. Also the basic typing function works with other OS devices such as fire tablets.
- Connect 2 Devices: Seamless switching between 2 Bluetooth devices (iOS/Android/Windows) with single-tap transitions (Fn+"1"/ "2").
- Orange Keys for Productivity Boost: The color-coded design help you to position the keys effortlessly and reduce mistyping. The orange keys are more visible than standard keys, engineered for speed typists.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: Only 6oz weight and slim 0.6in profile fits in most handbags. The flexible hinge allows you to fold it up for travel – perfect for coffee shops, flights, or campus life.
The documentation does not establish that every framework or model will work in every keyboard-extension context. Check support and runtime behavior for the extension’s target OS and devices rather than assuming compatibility. Foundation Models availability also depends on device and region support for Apple Intelligence. A model may not be ready—for example, while it is downloading—so check availability and offer a fallback.

Apple’s App Review Guidelines, section 4.4.1, require keyboard extensions to provide keyboard input functionality and a way to move to the next keyboard. They also state that keyboards must “Remain functional without full network access and without requiring full access.” A cloud-AI feature therefore cannot be the only way the keyboard works.
