These are capabilities described by the services, not independent test results. The key distinction is whether an item is saved as a link, a preview, extracted text, an uploaded file, or an archived copy.
Choose a library for the way you save
Before installing anything, decide what “save” needs to mean for you. A bookmark points to something online. A preview or reading view can make it easier to revisit. An uploaded file or archived page copy may preserve material beyond the original link, but does not guarantee every page or media item will remain available.

Set up a library you can retrieve from
- Choose one primary service. Base the choice on whether your main job is organizing references, keeping a visual media collection, or reading articles later.
- Set up capture on the devices you use. Raindrop lists extensions for major browsers and access for Windows, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android. Its download page lists minimums checked in 2026: iOS 17.4+, Android 7.0+, macOS Monterey 12+, and Windows 10+. Check Raindrop’s download page for current compatibility. For another service, verify its current browser and mobile options directly.
- Test one item of each kind. Save an article, a regular link, an image or screenshot, and a video. Open each entry and identify whether it is a link, preview, extracted article, uploaded file, or archived copy. This test clarifies what your setup actually retains.
- Start with a small structure. Create an Inbox and a few collections such as Read, Watch, Reference, and Projects. Add tags when they answer a recurring question, such as which project an item belongs to or what topic you need to find.
- Check the plan and backup options for important items. Raindrop says its free use includes unlimited bookmarks, collections, and devices; it places full-text search, permanent copies, more upload space, cloud backup, and cleanup tools in Pro. Features and plan terms can change, so confirm them on the Raindrop FAQ. wallabag offers self-hosting for readers who want to manage their own archive, but that choice also means taking responsibility for the hosting setup.
- Review the library periodically. Remove duplicates or dead links if your chosen tool supports cleanup. For important references, keep an export or backup where available rather than assuming a saved bookmark preserves the original content.
Understand what “saved” preserves
A bookmark is a pointer to a site, so it can stop working if the page moves, disappears, changes, or becomes restricted. An archived webpage copy is separate: Raindrop describes automatic copies of webpages and files, with permanent copies in Pro, but readers should check which content types and plan coverage apply. A service’s archive may not capture every dynamic or access-restricted page.
For images and videos, distinguish a saved URL or preview from the original media file stored in your library. Raindrop lists image and video uploads and in-library video viewing; Recollect lists images and videos among its supported items. Neither description alone establishes that every external image or video is copied in full when you save its link.

For reading, wallabag says it extracts article content and supports browser, phone, RSS, and e-reader workflows. Check offline behavior for your specific client and setup rather than assuming every saved article is available offline.
Check availability before choosing an older recommendation
Pocket is not a current option: Mozilla says the service shut down on July 8, 2025. Mozilla also says Firefox integration removal began with Firefox 140 and ESR versions 115 and 128.
