Yes—an Intel Mac mini can send a YouTube livestream using OBS, provided its macOS version is supported and its processor, network, and workload can sustain the chosen settings. But compatibility is not a 24/7 reliability guarantee. For OBS streaming on Intel Macs, use x264 rather than Intel VideoToolbox. Test the complete setup before relying on it, and do not assume YouTube will preserve a 24/7 broadcast as one automatically archived video.
What determines whether your Intel Mac mini can handle it?
“Intel Mac mini” covers multiple generations and configurations, so the model name alone is not enough to predict performance. Identify the year, processor, memory, macOS version, and condition of your particular machine before choosing a stream workload.

Check the model and workload
For example, Apple offered the 2018 Mac mini with a 3.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i3 or six-core Core i5, with a configurable six-core Core i7 and memory configurations up to 64GB. It includes Gigabit Ethernet. Those details apply to the 2018 model, not every Intel Mac mini; see Apple’s 2018 Mac mini technical specifications.

OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs, an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU, and macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later among its macOS requirements. Meeting those requirements does not establish that a machine can sustain your stream: the OBS Project cautions, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It says demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.

A simple scene with a looping video is a different workload from multiple live sources, animated overlays, browser sources, filters, or capture devices. There is no universal minimum memory figure or benchmark in these sources that can settle performance for your particular configuration. Test the actual scene at the actual output settings.
Which OBS encoder should an Intel Mac use?
For streaming from an Intel Mac, OBS’s guidance is to use x264. OBS says Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. VideoToolbox H.264 on Intel Mac is available for recording; that recording support should not be confused with YouTube streaming support. OBS documents the distinction in its hardware encoding guide.

Hardware encoders can move work away from the CPU, and OBS notes they may improve performance generally. That general benefit does not override its specific instruction for Intel Mac streaming. Do not select Intel VideoToolbox as your OBS YouTube streaming encoder on the assumption that its recording option also works for live output.

Set up and test the YouTube stream
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to available upload capacity, testing with representative audio and video movement, and monitoring stream health and messages. Its current encoder guidance is for ingest settings, not a promise that a particular Mac can encode them. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings as you configure OBS.

- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature before your planned start rather than assuming it will be available immediately. YouTube outlines the encoder workflow and activation timing in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio and retrieve its stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then create or select the stream and use its stream key in OBS. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Choose the appropriate YouTube ingest server and, where available, RTMPS; YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP.
- Configure OBS for the planned output. Select x264 for streaming on Intel Mac. Use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and frame rate your Mac and upload connection can sustain.
- Use a bitrate that fits the connection. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are ingest recommendations, not a Mac performance guarantee. Your upload connection must sustain the selected bitrate reliably, with room for normal variation and other network traffic.
- Measure upload capacity and run a representative test. YouTube recommends an upload speed test and a pre-live test with representative audio and movement. Check OBS for encoding strain and YouTube’s stream health for ingest warnings; adjust resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the test is unstable.
- Prefer wired Ethernet where practical. The 2018 Mac mini has Gigabit Ethernet, but an Ethernet cable only connects the computer to a wired network. It cannot increase the upload bandwidth supplied by your internet service or prevent ISP outages.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming streams into formats for viewers across devices and networks. That happens after ingest; it does not remove the need for your Mac and upload link to deliver a stable source stream.
Can it really stay live unattended around the clock?
No cited Apple, OBS, or YouTube guidance certifies a particular Intel Mac mini for continuous unattended operation. Reliability depends on the individual computer, its workload, power, internet service, software, and monitoring. A successful compatibility check is not evidence that a stream will stay connected indefinitely.

Before depending on a local setup, test the full scene, audio, encoder, resolution, frame rate, network, and power arrangement for a meaningful period. Keep an eye on YouTube stream health and plan how you will respond to a dropped connection or a Mac that stops encoding. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; the need for an interruption and recovery plan follows from those operational dependencies.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not say that a stream longer than 12 hours cannot remain live, but it also does not promise that a 24/7 feed will be preserved as one complete automatic archive. If you need a lasting recording, plan for that separately rather than relying on the under-12-hour archive guidance.
