Can an ESP32 Block Ads Without a Raspberry Pi? What It Can—and Can’t—Do

An ESP32 can work as a DNS sinkhole for listed ad and tracker domains. Learn what the documented projects need, how DNS setup affects coverage, and why $15 is not a verified complete-system price.

Yes. An ESP32 can act as a DNS sinkhole that blocks domains on a list, so you do not need a Raspberry Pi for that basic form of network-wide filtering. But it is not a universal ad blocker, and the evidence does not establish a current $15 price for a complete setup.

What an ESP32 ad blocker actually does

A DNS sinkhole handles domain lookups. When a device asks for a domain, the sinkhole checks it against a blocklist. For a listed domain, it can return a non-routable address such as 0.0.0.0; for an unlisted domain, it forwards the request to an upstream DNS resolver. The Raspberry Pi Foundation describes this workflow for Pi-hole, and the ESP32-C3 project documents the same basic approach for its implementation: Raspberry Pi Foundation’s Pi-hole guide and the ESP32-C3 project documentation.

Because filtering happens at DNS level, devices on the network can benefit without installing a browser extension—provided their DNS requests actually pass through the filtering device. This can be useful for devices that do not support extensions, but it does not make every ad or tracker blockable.

What hardware the documented ESP32 projects require

ESP32-C3 project

The documented ESP32-C3 implementation specifies a board with 4 MB of flash and no PSRAM. Rather than keeping full domain names in RAM, it stores sorted 40-bit hashes in flash. The project reports that its OTA-enabled partition leaves room for a smaller blocklist than its single-app partition. These are details of this particular design, not universal ESP32 requirements. See the ESP32-C3 project documentation.

That project recommends stable USB power. It describes an optional USB-A-to-USB-C adapter for powering the board from a router’s USB port, and warns that a weak adapter can cause brownouts during Wi-Fi transmission.

Arduino-based ESP32 project

A separate project has different hardware needs: its README says an ESP32-S3 with 8 MB of PSRAM can host its currently sized blocklist, while an ESP32 with 4 MB of PSRAM may truncate it. Those figures apply to that project’s blocklist and implementation, not the ESP32-C3 project. Its instructions also discuss configuring DNS on a router or device and note caveats involving IPv6 DNS and browser secure DNS. Details are in the ESP32_AdBlocker documentation.

Will it block ads across your whole network?

It can filter DNS lookups for clients configured to use it. Whether that amounts to whole-network coverage depends on your router and devices: clients need to send DNS requests through the ESP32. Router DNS settings, device-specific DNS settings, IPv6 DNS configuration, and browser secure DNS can change or bypass that path. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s guide outlines router, DHCP, and per-device configuration options for Pi-hole; the ESP32_AdBlocker project also discusses DNS configuration and secure-DNS caveats.

DNS filtering is limited to domains. If an ad or other content comes from the same domain as the site or service you want to use, blocking that domain may also block wanted content—or may not provide a clean way to remove just the ad. Cookie notices and app-install banners can remain because they are not necessarily served from a separately blockable advertising domain. The Raspberry Pi Foundation explains these limits in its Pi-hole guide.

ESP32 or Raspberry Pi with Pi-hole?

Consideration ESP32 Raspberry Pi with Pi-hole
Documented hardware The cited C3 project specifies 4 MB flash and no PSRAM. Other ESP32 projects can require different hardware, such as the S3 with 8 MB PSRAM in the separate Arduino-based project. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s walkthrough recommends a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.
Setup and DNS configuration Depends on the selected firmware and requires clients or the network to use the ESP32 for DNS. Project instructions identify configuration and DNS-bypass caveats. The Foundation tutorial describes router DNS, DHCP, and per-device configuration options.
Blocklist design Project-specific. The C3 project uses sorted 40-bit hashes in flash and reports partition-dependent list capacity; the separate project describes different memory requirements. Pi-hole is a documented DNS-filtering alternative; the cited tutorial explains its home-network setup.
Filtering limits Both approaches filter at DNS level, so neither guarantees removal of every ad, cookie notice, or app banner. Clients must use the filtering DNS path.
Matched performance comparison The cited sources do not provide an independent, matched-condition performance test, so they do not establish a performance winner.

The practical choice is less about which device is universally better and more about the firmware and setup you want. The ESP32-C3 route is a documented option if its board and blocklist design fit your needs. Pi-hole is an established alternative with an official Raspberry Pi Foundation walkthrough. Neither choice avoids the need to configure DNS for the clients you want to filter.

Is the complete setup really $15?

The available documentation does not verify $15 as the current all-in cost. The ESP32-C3 project gives approximate low-cost hardware claims, but these do not establish current retail prices or a complete bill of materials. The board, suitable power supply, and any adapter may be separate costs, and prices vary. Treat $15 as an unverified headline figure, not a reliable total for a ready-to-use setup.
