Sometimes—but “enterprise” alone is not a guarantee. Major providers generally say data submitted through their commercial services is not used to train general models by default. That can change through an opt-in, feedback, a customer-directed customization job, or a feature-specific setting. And a no-training commitment does not mean the provider never processes or retains the data.
What “not used for training” does—and does not—mean
Model training or improvement means using data to update a general model or improve its future performance. A provider’s default no-training commitment addresses that use, but it does not by itself answer every data-handling question.

- Fine-tuning or customization: A customer may direct a provider to adapt a model or configuration for the organization’s own use. That is distinct from using the data to train a general model.
- Inference and feature processing: A service must process a prompt to generate a response. Connected tools, grounding, or other features may also process or retain information to operate.
- Safety and abuse monitoring: Providers may analyze or review data to enforce use policies. This is not necessarily model training.
- Feedback: A rating or report may include the conversation it concerns, and providers may use that content to improve services.
- Retention and deletion: Prompts, outputs, files, logs, or application state may be stored even when they are excluded from general-model training. Retention periods, exceptions, and deletion behavior depend on the service and feature.
For example, OpenAI says API abuse-monitoring logs are generally retained for up to 30 days unless an exception applies, while endpoint application-state behavior varies. Its API documentation also describes retention controls and eligibility by endpoint: OpenAI API data controls.
What major providers say about commercial data
The following are provider statements for the named services, not a guarantee covering every product integration, contract, model, or configuration. Check the agreement and settings for the account your organization actually uses.

Where the default can change
Opt-ins, programs, and feedback
Some services provide a route for sharing data or authorize different treatment when a user takes a specific action. OpenAI says API owners can enable data sharing and that a feedback submission may include the entire associated conversation. Anthropic identifies its Development Partner Program as an exception to its commercial no-training default. Consumer products have separate rules: Anthropic describes consumer opt-in and safety-related paths, and says feedback may store the related conversation for up to five years and may be used for improvement. Customer-directed fine-tuning
A company may deliberately supply examples or other data to customize a model for its own use. Microsoft describes optional organization-specific fine-tuning, and AWS describes data submitted for Bedrock model customization. This is different from a provider using that data to improve a general model for other customers: Microsoft customer guide and AWS Bedrock customization documentation.

Feature-specific processing and storage
Data treatment can depend on the exact feature or endpoint. Google documents exceptions and feature behavior involving Grounding with Google Search or Maps and session resumption; prompts, context, or outputs may be retained for those service purposes. OpenAI’s API documentation likewise distinguishes endpoint behaviors and eligibility for retention controls. A service-wide training statement is not enough to establish how a particular workflow handles data: Google Vertex AI data governance and OpenAI API data controls.
How to check your organization’s actual exposure
- Identify the exact product and account. Confirm whether users are in a managed business workspace, an API account, or a consumer product. OpenAI separates individual services from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API; Anthropic distinguishes Claude for Work and API from Free, Pro, and Max.
- Read the applicable contract. Check the agreement and data-processing addendum, plus terms for models or subprocessors used by the service. Public product documentation may not establish your negotiated terms, region, or account configuration.
- Check what content is covered. Ask whether the commitment includes prompts, outputs, uploaded files, connector data, feedback, and telemetry—not only typed prompts.
- Look for exceptions and switches. Review opt-ins, API data-sharing settings, feedback actions, partner or development programs, fine-tuning jobs, and administrator controls.
- Review retention separately. Establish how long logs, files, outputs, and application state persist; what controls apply; when deletion takes effect; and whether backups or legal exceptions are covered.
- Check the specific feature and model. Verify the endpoint, connected tools, grounding or session features, any retention-control eligibility, and any separate terms for a third-party model.
Can you treat enterprise AI data as confidential?
Not on the word “enterprise” alone. Provider commitments can be meaningful, but they are scoped to particular products, contracts, and configurations. Google’s service terms state that third-party models are subject to third-party terms, and AWS Bedrock makes multiple model providers available. Before submitting sensitive material, confirm the actual service and model terms, the organization’s settings, and the retention behavior of the features users will rely on: Google Cloud service terms and AWS Bedrock security guidance.
