Yes: a prompt-driven Dungeon Master can turn a syllabus into a text RPG that quizzes a learner on their notes. Jahnavi S T’s Syllabus Dungeon gives each topic a monster with 3 HP; correct answers deal damage, while wrong answers cost the player health and trigger an explanation. It is a prototype built around one student’s DBMS exam—not evidence that the approach improves grades or works for every learner.
How does the Syllabus Dungeon study game work?
Jahnavi created the project to help a friend who was struggling with “Unit 3 (normalization)” in a database management systems (DBMS) syllabus. In the author’s framing, ordinary flashcard apps—with red crosses and a broken streak—made studying feel worse. Syllabus Dungeon replaces that experience with a text-based dungeon: each syllabus unit becomes a room, and each topic becomes a monster.

The encounter rules
- Each topic monster starts with 3 HP.
- A correct answer removes 1 HP from the monster.
- A wrong answer removes 10 HP from the player, and the Dungeon Master explains the correct answer.
- Topics the player struggles with are tracked so they can return later.
The normalization room is the Cursed Swamp, where the Normalization Slime serves as the first guardian. These mechanics make progress visible, but the project description does not establish that the game improves exam performance.
How can an AI Dungeon Master quiz from notes without giving away answers?
The intended design uses the learner’s notes as study material and asks questions based on them. The Dungeon Master should quote the relevant source line only after the player answers; showing it with the question could reveal the answer in advance.

That timing mattered in the author’s first prompt: it required a source quote too early, so the answer appeared alongside the question. Jahnavi says the rule was changed to show the quote after the response. In a self-run demonstration, the author intentionally confused second normal form (2NF) with third normal form (3NF). The Dungeon Master corrected the mix-up, explained the distinction, applied damage, and added the topic to the weak-topic list. This describes the author’s prototype test, not a test with the intended learner.
What model and setup did the author use?
Jahnavi reports using Gemma 4 31B IT through Google AI Studio because the laptop did not have enough storage for a local installation. The project is described as a single system prompt that sets the rules and tone, with the study notes supplied separately as material.

Google describes Gemma 4 as an open-weight model family and documents both local and hosted deployment options: Google’s Gemma documentation. That means local execution is an available option for Gemma; it does not show that this particular Syllabus Dungeon build was run locally. A similar project’s choice between hosted and local use depends on available device storage and compute, whether the workflow can stick to supplied notes, and the applicable service’s data terms.

What did the prototype test—and what does it not show?
The author tested the game by playing as the friend and deliberately giving both correct and incorrect answers. Jahnavi also reports two prompt issues discovered during the build: the source quote initially exposed the answer too soon, and the prompt initially omitted the player’s starting HP, leading the model to invent 100. The final prompt set starting player HP to 100 and wrong-answer damage to 10.

The friend had not played the game when the post was published. There is therefore no account of the intended learner’s reaction, no measured learning outcome, and no basis for claiming improved exam results. The described tests show how the author checked the prompt’s behavior, not how well the approach works across learners or subjects.

Jahnavi reports that, in the described AI Studio setup, Google Search grounding was forced on for Gemma, which conflicted with the project’s notes-only requirement. That is the author’s experience with that setup; it should not be treated as a rule for every account, model, or current AI Studio configuration. Google’s terms describe Search grounding as a service available through AI Studio and the Gemini API: Google AI terms.

Data handling also depends on whether the service is unpaid or paid and on the user’s circumstances. Google’s terms say content submitted to unpaid services—including AI Studio and unpaid Gemini API quota—may be used to provide, improve, and develop Google products and machine-learning technologies. They advise users not to submit sensitive, confidential, or personal information to unpaid services. The terms distinguish paid services, where prompts and responses are not used to improve products under the described terms. Check the terms that apply to your account and service before entering notes; do not assume every AI Studio session has the same billing or data treatment.
