No: normal airport X-ray screening and walk-through metal detectors are not expected to erase or corrupt data on SD memory cards. SanDisk says applicable SD and microSD cards resist 100mGy from airport X-rays, but that rating applies only to products with the relevant durability marking. Keep a backup anyway: card or transfer problems remain possible, and a backup protects against more than airport screening.
What happens to an SD card at airport security?
Airport X-ray screening and walk-through metal detectors pose different concerns from the film-era worry about X-rays damaging undeveloped photographs. SD cards store data in solid-state flash memory; SanDisk describes certain SD and microSD products as “X-Ray Proof” and says they “Resist 100mGy from airport X-rays.” That is a manufacturer specification, not a universal rating for every card.

SanDisk’s 2022 documentation applies the 100mGy figure to cards carrying the relevant durability marking. Check the packaging or product information for the exact card rather than assuming all SD cards share the rating. The documentation also lists product-dependent tolerances, so the markings on the specific package matter.

A walk-through metal detector is not expected to corrupt the card’s stored data either. SanDisk’s 2022 product page lists 5,000 Gauss magnetic-field resistance for applicable cards, but that specification should not be generalized to every card or treated as a rating for every airport device.

Did travelers’ photos survive airport screening?
In a 2008 SitePoint forum discussion, several travelers said their cards had survived repeated airport screenings. One participant described eight crossings in a week with cards in a camera, bag, and pocket, without data loss. Those reports are anecdotal: they show individual experiences, not a controlled test of scanner equipment or a guarantee for every card.
The same thread includes a report of four CompactFlash cards becoming unreadable after a trip, but it does not establish that airport screening caused the failure. A card failing after a flight is not, by timing alone, evidence that a scanner damaged it.

How to protect photos when you fly
- Back up before departure. Copy important images to another device or storage destination before traveling; do not make the card the only copy.
- Use more than one card for irreplaceable work. Smaller-capacity cards limit how much material is on any single card if it is lost or fails.
- Match the card to the camera. Confirm the host supports the card format—SD, SDHC, SDXC, or microSD—and that the card’s speed class meets the camera’s recording needs.
- Check the exact durability markings. If X-ray, shock, drop, water, temperature, or magnetic-field resistance matters to your use, verify the marking for that exact product. SanDisk’s product materials list up to 5 meters of drop resistance and 500g shock resistance for applicable cards; those figures are product-specific, not guarantees for the whole SD category.
- Handle transfers carefully. SanDisk recommends using a compatible card reader rather than connecting the camera directly to a computer, saying this is faster and less likely to corrupt data. It also recommends formatting cards in the camera; computer formatting can cause corruption or data loss.
- Avoid an adapter where possible. SanDisk warns that using a microSD adapter in a full-size SD camera slot can cause corruption or image loss. Use a card that fits the device’s slot when practical.
If a card is unreadable after a trip
Do not assume airport screening was the cause. Check the card’s age and condition, whether the camera or reader supports its format, any microSD adapter involved, and whether a file-system or transfer problem occurred. Avoid formatting a card that contains the only copy of important images; first preserve what is accessible and work from a backup or seek recovery help if needed.
SanDisk’s advice to use a reader, format in-camera, and keep backups addresses common handling risks regardless of travel. Airport exposure is not a substitute explanation for problems that can also arise during ordinary use.
