You can inspect the incoming HTTP Referer header to see what referral information a Google-linked visit provides, but you cannot rely on it to reveal the full Google results URL or the search query. To find which searches drove clicks, use Google Search Console’s Performance report.

What a referrer URL means

A referrer is the page a visitor was on before following a link to your site. Google Ads Help defines it as “the webpage that sends visitors to your site using a link” (Google Ads Help: Referrer URL).

In an HTTP request, the header is spelled Referer—one “r” after “refe”—because of a historical misspelling. In explanatory text, “referrer” is the usual spelling. The header may provide the referring page’s origin, path, and query string, depending on the referring page’s policy and the navigation context. It does not include URL fragments or embedded username and password information (MDN: Referer header).

How to inspect the incoming Referer header

Your web server or application can read the Referer header on an incoming request when the browser sends it. The value may be a full URL, only an origin such as https://www.google.com/, or absent. Its contents depend on the referring document’s referrer policy and the navigation context.

Inspect the request received by your server or application; do not assume that a page analytics report or the address bar contains the raw header value. If the header is missing or has only an origin, that request does not provide the missing path or search terms.

Why the header may not show the Google search query

The Referer header is not a dependable way to recover a visitor’s exact Google query. Google’s March 19, 2012 announcement said that, for browsers with appropriate support, it would use the referrer meta tag to simplify the referring URL sent when someone visited a page from an organic search result. That historical announcement documents origin-only referrers for some organic clicks; it is not a guarantee about every current browser or request (Google Search Central, March 19, 2012).

Even when a header contains more than an origin, its detail is governed by referrer policy. A full referring URL, a reduced value, and no value are all possible. Do not infer a search term from the presence of a Google domain alone.

Use Search Console for Google query and click reporting

For the question “Which Google searches brought people to my site?”, use the Google Search Console Performance report rather than trying to extract query data from individual request headers. Google’s guidance for Google Images traffic points site owners to that report to measure queries and clicks. The same guidance describes Google Images referrers as https://www.google.com or the appropriate country-code Google domain where applicable; those details are specific to Google Images and should not be generalized to every Google Search surface (Google Search Central, July 17, 2018).
