Can AI Test My App? How AI Helps With Software Testing

AI can speed up browser-test creation, but generated scenarios and assertions still need human review. Here’s how to start with Playwright workflows.

Yes—AI can help you create and run software tests, especially browser tests for web apps. It can turn recorded browser actions or a plain-language scenario into a first draft, and some Playwright workflows can plan tests, generate files, run them, and try to repair failures. But generated tests are not proof that your app works: review what they do and what they assert before relying on them.

What AI can—and cannot—do in software testing

AI-assisted testing can reduce the manual work of drafting test code. For example, Playwright Codegen records interactions in a browser and generates test code and locators. Playwright also documents an agent workflow that explores an app, creates a test plan, generates test files, and attempts to heal failures.

Those capabilities do not mean an AI has tested every part of an app. The documented workflows here focus on browser-based test creation and execution. They do not establish universal coverage of native mobile apps, performance, security, accessibility, or every other quality concern. Nor do they guarantee that a generated test reflects the product’s intended behavior.

Three practical ways to use AI for browser tests

Record a real user flow with Playwright Codegen

For a web app that already uses Playwright, Codegen is a straightforward starting point. It opens a browser and an inspector; you perform the flow, and it produces a draft test. Playwright’s locator guidance prioritizes accessible roles, text, and test IDs, and attempts to make ambiguous matches unique.

  1. Start the app in the environment where you want to test it.
  2. Run Playwright Codegen using your project’s installed Playwright setup.
  3. In the opened browser, perform one important user journey, such as signing in and submitting a form.
  4. Inspect the generated code and adapt it to your project’s conventions and test data.
  5. Add or correct assertions so the test checks the intended outcome, not just that the recorded clicks completed.
  6. Run the test, inspect failures, and keep the test only after its behavior makes sense.

Codegen is useful for producing a first draft, not for deciding what the correct outcome should be. A recording can capture accidental actions, omit important edge cases, or generate selectors that are brittle when the interface changes.

Ask an assistant to draft a test from browser context

A documented Microsoft workflow combines a running app, browser access through Playwright MCP, and an AI assistant asked to create a scenario. The developer reviews the generated test before committing it. For a complex journey, recording a happy path first and asking the assistant to adapt that recording to the project’s conventions can provide useful context.

Keep the request narrow: specify the user role, starting state, actions, expected result, and any relevant test data. Then compare every generated assertion with the app’s requirements and actual behavior. Browser access helps the assistant observe the interface; it does not establish that the assistant understands the product’s rules.

Use a planner-generator-healer workflow

Playwright documents three test agents: a planner explores the app and creates a test plan, a generator turns the plan into test files, and a healer executes tests and attempts to repair failures. Treat this as a sequence of suggestions and changes to review. A plan can miss important scenarios, and a repair can make a test pass by weakening or changing the wrong behavior.

The agent documentation is labeled for a next version rather than establishing that the workflow is available in every stable Playwright release. Before adopting it, verify current stable-version support, setup requirements, and compatibility with your project.

How to tell whether a generated test is trustworthy

A test is valuable when it protects an expected behavior. A passing result is not meaningful if the test checks the wrong thing or merely repeats the implementation’s current behavior.

  • Check the scenario: Does it match a requirement or a real user need, including the starting state and relevant data?
  • Check the assertions: Do they verify an observable result—such as a confirmation, changed value, or navigation outcome—that should remain true?
  • Check the failure behavior: Would the test fail if the feature broke in the way it is meant to catch?
  • Check the selectors: Prefer stable, meaningful locators; confirm that a selector identifies the intended element and not an accidental match.
  • Check maintainability: Can another developer understand the test, its setup, and why its assertions matter?
  • Review generated code for security: AI-generated code can be inaccurate or insecure. Test and review it as you would other code before merging.

Microsoft’s documented workflow includes reviewing generated tests before committing them. Make that review a human approval step, particularly when a test encodes business rules, handles sensitive data, or is used as a release gate.

Choose a starting approach that fits your team

Situation Reasonable starting point What to check
Your web app already has Playwright tests Record one important flow with Codegen, then edit the draft. Whether the locators and assertions fit the existing suite and conventions.
You want an assistant to work from a live browser Try the documented assistant-plus-Playwright-MCP authoring workflow. Browser access, project context, review and approval of generated files.
You want more automated exploration and repair Assess Playwright’s planner-generator-healer workflow. Current stable-version support, setup, and how you will review plans and repairs.

For any option, consider the language and framework already used by your test suite, required browser and platform coverage, readability of generated code, usefulness of failure evidence, review controls, setup, and how app data is handled. The documented workflows establish capabilities, not a neutral vendor ranking or measured productivity gains.

Use screenshots as visual evidence, not as a substitute for tests

A screenshot can help a person inspect a page’s appearance at a particular point in a flow. It does not by itself verify that a form submits correctly, permissions are enforced, or an app behaves properly across all relevant states. Treat screenshots as one input to a test or review process, not a pass/fail verdict unless you have separately defined and validated visual assertions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, useful when a workflow needs clean page captures or an AI agent needs to request one. It is not a replacement for a test runner or for reviewing expected behavior. Its capture options include full-page and selector-based shots, device and viewport settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting conditions, and PDF output.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common problems and what to check

The test passes, but the feature is still wrong

The generated assertions may be too weak, or may check a result unrelated to the requirement. Revisit the intended behavior and add an assertion that would fail if that behavior broke.

The test fails after a harmless interface change

The generated locator may depend on unstable page details or may match more than one element. Review the locator and prefer a stable role, label, text, or test ID where appropriate; confirm it identifies the intended control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An AI repair makes the failure disappear

Do not accept a repair just because the run turns green. Compare the change with the original requirement and failure evidence; confirm it has not removed a meaningful assertion or altered the scenario.

The assistant cannot produce a useful scenario

Provide a running app and more precise context: starting conditions, user actions, expected outcomes, and project conventions. For a complicated flow, record a happy path first and ask the assistant to adapt it, then review the result.

The suggested agent setup does not match your installation

Check the current stable Playwright documentation and your installed version before following setup instructions for the planner-generator-healer agents. The documented agent page is labeled next-version, so availability and integration requirements may differ.

A sensible first experiment

  1. Choose one important browser-based user journey with a clear expected outcome.
  2. Use Codegen or a browser-connected assistant to draft a test, rather than asking AI to cover the entire application at once.
  3. Review every action, locator, and assertion against the requirement and the app’s real behavior.
  4. Run the test and inspect both failures and passes; revise tests that are brittle, incomplete, or assert the wrong outcome.
  5. Have a developer approve the test before adding it to the suite or using it as a release check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI-generated test code need a human review?

Yes. Generated code can be inaccurate or insecure, and a test can encode the wrong expected behavior. Review and test it before relying on it.

Can a screenshot prove that my app works?

No. A screenshot records appearance at a point in time; it does not establish that app behavior, security, or other quality requirements are correct.
