Can AI-Powered Marketing Earn Customer Trust?

AI can improve relevance and consistency, but customer trust depends on respectful personalization, understandable data use, human oversight, and accountability.

Do customers trust AI? Not simply because it makes marketing faster or more personalized. AI can help a business offer more relevant, consistent interactions, but trust depends on whether those interactions are useful, respectful, understandable, and backed by clear human accountability.

What AI can—and cannot—do for customer trust

AI can help marketers tailor recommendations, messages, and service to a customer’s context. When that tailoring is genuinely useful and respectful, it can make an interaction feel more relevant. When it feels intrusive, relies on unexpected data, or treats a person as a transaction to optimize, personalization can undermine the relationship instead. TechRadar’s August 20, 2026 article makes the key distinction: AI is a means of shaping customer interactions, not a guarantee of trust.

That means marketing teams should ask not only whether a system can automate an interaction, but whether customers can understand and accept how it works—and whether someone is accountable if it gets something wrong.

Why efficiency is not a measure of trust

Faster responses, lower handling costs, or more conversions may indicate operational gains. They do not show on their own that customers feel confident in the business or want to maintain the relationship. Measure customer-facing outcomes alongside efficiency: for example, satisfaction, complaints, corrections to automated outputs, and whether people can understand or challenge consequential decisions. These are practical suggested measures, not statistics reported by the sources.

A campaign can perform well by an operational measure while still leaving customers confused or uneasy about how their data was used. Treat customer confidence as an outcome to assess, not something to infer from speed or engagement alone.

Make data use and automation understandable

People need enough context to understand when their information shapes marketing and when automation materially affects an interaction. The right explanation depends on the situation and the people affected; a generic disclosure may not make a sensitive or surprising use clear. NIST identifies transparency and accountability as characteristics of trustworthy AI and emphasizes that transparency is contextual.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) is voluntary guidance, not a certification or a promise that a system is risk-free. It describes characteristics to consider together, including validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability and interpretability, privacy enhancement, and fairness with harmful bias managed. These can involve tradeoffs; no single feature makes an AI system trustworthy in every context.

Keep people responsible for consequential interactions

Automation may be appropriate for routine, low-consequence tasks, but complex, sensitive, or consequential customer interactions call for human review. Businesses should make clear who owns customer-facing AI, how a customer can reach a person, and who can correct an error. A handoff that leaves a customer facing a loop of automated replies does not provide meaningful accountability.

NIST’s AI RMF Playbook groups suggested actions under Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. The following marketing workflow adapts those ideas; it is a practical synthesis, not a set of steps NIST or TechRadar prescribes specifically for marketing.

Govern: assign owners

  • Name accountable owners for customer-facing AI, claims about its capabilities, and escalation to a person.
  • Define who can pause or change a system when it produces harmful, misleading, or persistently inaccurate results.

Map: find where AI shapes the journey

  • Inventory AI use in targeting, recommendations, generated content, and customer service.
  • Identify sensitive data and interactions where an error or unfair outcome could have greater consequences.

Measure: include customer outcomes

  • Review operational performance alongside customer confidence, satisfaction, complaints, and correction rates.
  • Check whether customers can understand or contest material outputs, rather than assuming a disclosed process is clear.

Manage: test, route, and correct

  • Make relevant data use and automation understandable in context.
  • Test outputs for reliability and unfair impact, route higher-stakes interactions to human review, and correct failures.

Make claims about AI and consent verifiable

Marketing claims about an AI service must be truthful, non-deceptive, and supported by evidence, according to the FTC’s advertising guidance. That applies to claims about what a system can do, what information it uses, whether people consented, and how targeting works.

A concrete example came in August 2026, when the FTC announced final orders settling allegations involving Cox Media Group and two marketing firms. The firms had allegedly claimed an AI-powered service could target local ads using conversations captured from consumers’ smart devices and that consumers had opted in. The FTC said the service was not based on voice data and consumers had not opted in; the orders prohibit specified misrepresentations about service features, voice-data collection and use, consent, and geographic targeting. This case illustrates why claims about listening, targeting, and consent need evidence. It is not proof that AI marketing generally uses or misuses voice data. Read the FTC’s announcement.

A practical test before deployment

Before putting an AI-supported marketing interaction in front of customers, ask whether the information used is appropriate and expected, whether the automated role is understandable, and whether a person can intervene when the interaction becomes sensitive or consequential. Then evaluate the experience through customer outcomes as well as operational results. If the business cannot explain the use, substantiate its claims, or take responsibility for failures, the system is not ready to earn trust.
