Not reliably in every case. AI-writing detectors estimate whether text resembles machine-generated writing; phishing defenses look for malicious intent and evidence such as sender identity, links, attachments, impersonation, and message context. Wording alone cannot provide a dependable phishing verdict, so use layered email protections and independently verify high-impact requests.
Why AI authorship is not a phishing verdict
A message can be AI-assisted and legitimate, or written by a person and malicious. A polished tone does not prove safety, and awkward grammar does not prove a message is dangerous—or harmless. An authorship classifier and an email threat filter answer different questions: one estimates how text was produced; the other tries to identify harmful messages using broader signals.

That distinction matters because detecting likely AI text does not establish malicious intent. Conversely, a phishing message can be dangerous even if no system can determine who or what wrote it.

There is no directly applicable, validated statistic here for how reliably detectors identify AI-generated phishing in real-world inboxes. NIST’s 2025 report on text-to-text detection evaluated generated and human-written summaries—not phishing emails—and reports substantial variation across systems. Some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected almost all generators. That is a reason for caution about generalizing detector performance, not a measurement of phishing detection accuracy. Read NIST’s pilot-study overview.
#1 Best Overall
- PHISHING-RESISTANT 2FA: Cryptographically binds to real domains, making phishing attacks impossible unlike SMS codes or authenticator apps.
- 3-SIDE CAPACITIVE TOUCH: Tap the end, left, or right side to authenticate, so it works in any orientation or crowded USB port.
- MULTI-COLOR LED INDICATOR: Blue means ready, blinking blue means tap now, green means success, and red means error for instant status feedback.
- IP68 WATERPROOF & BATTERY-FREE: Crush-resistant one-piece construction survives daily carry on a keychain or in a bag for years without any batteries.
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, AWS, and any FIDO2 / U2F / WebAuthn service, storing up to 100 passkeys.
A 2024 arXiv preprint, Analysis and prevention of AI-based phishing email attacks, reports encouraging machine-learning results in its experiments and argues for training with AI-generated examples. Those findings are early research, not a validated field-wide success rate or guarantee. Read the preprint.
NIST’s Phish Scale is also easy to misinterpret: it concerns how difficult simulated phishing exercises may be for people to detect, accounting for message characteristics and recipient context. It is not an AI-authorship detector. See NIST’s Phish Scale information.

- SECURITY KEY FOR ENTERPRISE ACCESS: Supports FIDO2 passkeys and U2F for secure authentication across enterprise IT systems.
- PHISHING-RESISTANT AUTHENTICATION: Enables passwordless login with secure on-device credential storage and PIN-based user verification.
- COMPATIBLE WITH ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS: Works with FIDO2, WebAuthn, and U2F across enterprise, cloud, and modern IT environments.
- DRIVERLESS FIDO2 AUTHENTICATION: FIDO2 works natively with modern browsers and platforms. No drivers required.
- USB AND NFC CONNECTIVITY: Supports authentication via USB-C and NFC. No batteries required.
How to assess a suspicious message
Judge the request and its surrounding evidence rather than trying to identify an AI’s writing style. For a message asking for credentials, money, confidential data, or urgent action:
- Check the sender identity. Read the full sender address and scrutinize the domain, not just the display name.
- Inspect destinations carefully. Check the actual link domain before visiting; do not rely on a familiar-looking label or logo.
- Treat unexpected attachments cautiously. Avoid opening them unless you can establish that they are expected and legitimate.
- Compare the request with the normal process. Unexpected urgency, secrecy, or a change in payment or account details deserves independent scrutiny.
- Verify through a separate trusted channel. Use a known phone number or established contact method—not contact details supplied in the suspicious message—to confirm consequential requests.
None of these checks depends on deciding whether a human or an AI wrote the message.

What organizations should put in place
Practical defenses examine more than prose. CISA’s counter-phishing guidance describes secure email gateway capabilities that screen message headers and malicious content, check URLs against reputation feeds, and apply configurable rules. Read CISA’s counter-phishing guidance.
CISA’s *Risk in Focus: Generative AI in Elections* document, which states “As of January 18, 2024,” advises organizations to prepare for sophisticated AI-enabled phishing and social engineering. It recommends strong cybersecurity protocols, phishing-resistant MFA such as FIDO authentication, endpoint detection and response software, and email authentication protocols DMARC, SPF, and DKIM. These are risk-reduction measures, not proof that a system can identify AI authorship. Read CISA’s AI risk guidance.

A CISA Microsoft 365 minimum viable secure configuration document includes impersonation protection, first-time-sender warnings, and AI-based phishing detection. It is explicitly a draft baseline for Microsoft 365; its product-specific configuration should not be treated as a universal setting or capability across email services. View the draft baseline.
Organizations can combine email filtering with sender-impersonation checks, clear user warnings and reporting routes, SPF/DKIM/DMARC where applicable, and phishing-resistant MFA. A FIDO-compatible security key is one physical way to implement phishing-resistant MFA: it helps protect account access if credentials are stolen, but it does not detect AI-written messages. CISA’s ransomware guidance also includes phishing-related awareness and reporting practices. Read CISA’s ransomware guide.

How to judge an AI or email-security tool
Before relying on a product’s detection claim, establish what it detects and what evidence it uses. A tool focused on likely AI authorship is not interchangeable with one that inspects spoofing, sender reputation, links, attachments, or account context.
- Detection target: Does it flag malicious links or attachments, impersonation, spoofing, suspicious patterns, likely AI authorship, or some combination?
- Evidence and coverage: Does it analyze text alone or also headers, domains, URLs, attachments, and message context? Which mail platform and post-delivery workflows does it support?
- Error costs: How does it balance missed threats against false positives that interrupt legitimate email? What review, quarantine, reporting, and investigation options are available?
- Evaluation: Ask for results on current, representative messages and for both true-positive and false-positive performance. A benchmark on summaries is not a phishing benchmark.
NIST’s text-to-text evaluation task describes measures such as AUC, equal error rate, true-positive rate at a specified false-positive rate, and Bayes risk. Such metrics are meaningful for a purchasing or deployment decision only when the test data and evaluation reflect the phishing task the tool is expected to handle. See NIST’s text-to-text evaluation task.
