For a specific flight, check the operating airline’s flight-status page or app first. Then check the FAA’s airport status for conditions at both the departure and arrival airports, and confirm any effect on your flight with the airline. FAA airport updates show general conditions, not an individual flight’s status.
Check the airline for your specific flight
- Open the operating airline’s flight-status page or app. Search using the flight number and travel date if requested. The airline is the primary source here for an individual flight’s current status and flight-specific updates. The FAA’s Preparing to Fly page says, “Your airline also provides up-to-date information for your specific flight.”
- Check again as departure approaches. Conditions can change, so recheck before leaving for the airport and while traveling. There is no guaranteed update interval established for these pages.
Use FAA airport status to understand broader delays
For U.S. airports, the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center’s National Airport Status page provides general airport conditions and information about delay programs that may affect traffic. Check both the origin and destination: disruption at either end may be relevant to your trip.

Do not treat an airport-wide delay notice as confirmation that your particular flight is delayed. The FAA states, “The status information provided on this site indicates general airport conditions; it is not flight-specific.” Use the airline’s lookup to verify the individual flight.

Flight and airport status information can change, but “real time” does not guarantee that every page or alert updates instantly or reaches you immediately. The FAA says it does not track flights on its site and does not research individual delay inquiries; its airport status is context, while the airline handles flight-specific information.

The FAA’s Aviation Information System (AIS) can send airport delay information to email and wireless devices. The FAA cautions that delivery timeliness partly depends on the email service provider, including whether it batches messages. Treat AIS alerts as a way to receive airport information, not a guaranteed instant notification about a specific flight.
If the flight is canceled or delayed
For a cancellation reason, flight-specific details, or rebooking, contact the airline. The FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center FAQ explains: “The FAA/Air Traffic Control does not cancel flights. You will need to contact your airline to determine why they canceled your flight.” See the FAA’s Frequently Asked Questions for its guidance.
