Those details matter: without them, it is not possible to say what the planner can reliably route around.
What must be true for a lift-aware route to help?
A useful route has to account for the whole journey, not just whether the origin and destination stations carry an “accessible” label. For a rider who needs step-free access, one unavailable lift at a platform, interchange or exit can make an otherwise reasonable itinerary unusable.

Transport agencies illustrate the distinction in different ways. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) distinguishes fully and partially accessible stations and advises riders to check elevator status before travelling. Its accessible trip option accounts for current service status and elevator outages, according to its Guide to Accessible Transit on Buses and Subways. These are New York City examples, not evidence that AccessPath-ai uses MTA information.
Transport for NSW says its accessible-trip results show wheelchair-accessible vehicles and stops and interchanges without known lift or escalator outages. The agency also warns that choosing accessible services can reduce the available options. Its accessible-trip guidance advises checking service alerts and allowing extra time when lifts or toilets are out of order.

What should AccessPath-ai show about a route?
For a rider to judge whether a suggested journey is usable, the planner needs to make its assumptions visible. A station-level accessibility label alone is not enough to show that a particular path is open.
- Access needs: State what the route filter means, such as step-free travel or wheelchair-accessible vehicles and stops. Do not assume every rider needs the same thing.
- Lift status and freshness: Identify the agency or feed providing outage information and when it was last updated. A status that is old, missing or ambiguous should not appear equivalent to a confirmed working lift.
- Where the lift is needed: Match an outage to the relevant route segment—such as a platform transfer or station exit—rather than treating every lift at a station as interchangeable.
- Tradeoffs: Make it possible to compare walking distance, transfers and modes, as well as travel time. Transport for London (TfL) says, “You can select from options to say whether you can use stairs or escalators, which types of transport you like to use, how far you’re prepared to walk and more.” Its accessible-journey guidance describes those preferences.
- What to do next: When the information is incomplete or changes, direct the rider to the transit agency’s current station status and alerts rather than presenting the itinerary as guaranteed.
These are practical criteria for evaluating a lift-aware planner, not confirmed AccessPath-ai features. The project’s data source, refresh interval, outage-matching method, alternative modes and tested behaviour are not established here.

How to check an itinerary when a lift is out
- Check the agency’s live status for the stations on the trip. Look up the relevant station and, where available, the specific lift or equipment. The MTA’s Status tab guidance describes searching outages by station or equipment ID and filtering by alert type; this applies to its New York City app.
- Confirm the path, not just the station label. Check that the lifts needed to reach the platform, make each transfer and exit are reported available. The MTA recommends checking elevator status before travel in its accessible-stations guidance.
- Compare alternatives against the rider’s needs. Consider a different interchange, fewer transfers, less walking or another mode such as a bus. A shorter or faster route is not automatically a more usable one.
- Recheck close to departure and allow extra time. Lift availability can change after a route is planned. Transport for NSW specifically advises checking alerts and allowing extra time when lifts or toilets are out of order.
- If status is missing or unclear, do not treat the route as confirmed. Consult the agency’s alerts or station information and choose an option whose access requirements can be verified.
Why accessible routing is a tradeoff, not a simple filter
Filtering out routes that depend on stairs or lifts with known outages can protect a rider from an unusable itinerary, but it may leave fewer choices. A route with more transfers may reduce walking; a route with fewer transfers may rely on a lift whose status is uncertain. The right comparison depends on the rider’s access requirements and preferences, which is why agencies expose settings for walking, stairs, escalators and transport modes.

Coverage also differs by system. The Toronto Transit Commission reported that 55 of its 70 stations had elevator access to train platforms and transfers at the end of 2024. That is a dated Toronto figure about access coverage; it is not a measure of elevator reliability and should not be generalized to other cities.

Riders’ questions can be specific to a station’s internal layout: one New York City rider asked how to map elevators connecting a platform to a mezzanine. That single Reddit question is an anecdote, not a representative survey, but it highlights why a station-wide label may not answer whether a particular transfer is possible.

The premise—building a subway planner for a sibling that accounts for broken lifts—addresses a real routing problem. To evaluate what the particular tool can do, a reader needs the city and transit agency, the sibling’s relevant access requirements, the source and update time of outage data, how outages are connected to route segments, and what the planner does with stale or unclear information. Without those specifics or reported testing, it would be misleading to claim that AccessPath-ai prevents a rider from being stranded or that its routes are verified accessible.
