You send YouTube one live feed at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you choose; YouTube automatically transcodes that feed into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not guarantee that every viewer will see the same set of quality options, such as 1080p, 720p, and lower resolutions.
What “different resolutions” means for a rerun
A prerecorded gaming rerun is not a special YouTube Live mode. In the usual workflow, a computer plays the recorded gameplay into an encoder, and the encoder sends that output to YouTube as a live broadcast. YouTube documents encoder-based broadcasting for gameplay and screen sharing; treating a video file as the encoder’s input is the practical application of that workflow.

You choose the incoming feed’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. YouTube then transcodes the live feed into multiple playback formats. Those are separate stages: choosing a 1080p encoder output does not mean YouTube receives a separate 720p feed, and it does not promise a fixed viewer-side quality menu for every stream. YouTube Help describes “many different output formats,” not a guaranteed resolution ladder.
Choose the rerun’s outgoing quality
Start with the source recording
Use the recording’s native resolution and frame rate as your reference. Sending a higher-resolution encoder output than the source does not add detail that is not in the footage. Choose an output that suits the material and remains reliable on the connection used to send the stream.

Set the encoder for a stable stream
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose the outgoing values in your encoder. The source recording and the encoder output are related but not identical choices.
- Bitrate: Set a bitrate appropriate to the chosen output and the stability of your upload connection. YouTube advises choosing quality that works reliably with the available internet connection; there is no single bitrate that is right for every source and connection.
- Rate control: YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval.
- Latency: YouTube says 2160p streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency.
Before making the rerun public, test with conditions similar to the actual broadcast and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If the connection is unstable, lower the outgoing quality until the feed is reliable rather than assuming a higher setting will improve the viewer experience.
Set up and check a prerecorded gaming live stream
- Prepare the video. Confirm that the recording plays correctly and decide whether it will run once or be replayed. Make sure you have the rights to the game footage, music, and other material in it. A live broadcast is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; permission to use one part of a recording does not automatically clear every song or other asset in it.
- Create a YouTube Live broadcast and get its stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that broadcast. YouTube may require live-streaming access to be enabled for the channel, so check Studio if the option is unavailable.
- Configure the encoder. Select the recording as the playback input, then set the outgoing resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, in line with YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- Test before going public. Start an unlisted or otherwise non-public test if that fits your workflow. Check that video and audio are present, that the encoder is sending the intended quality, and that YouTube reports a healthy stream. Test under conditions similar to the real broadcast.
- Start the live broadcast and inspect playback. Confirm the stream is live in YouTube Studio, then open the viewer-side player and inspect its available quality choices. YouTube creates multiple output formats, but the exact choices should be checked on the actual stream rather than assumed in advance.
- Save a backup and verify the replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and says 1440p and 2160p streams are also automatically archived. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording or backup for a long rerun, and check Studio afterward to confirm what was retained. Replays can appear as videos on the channel.
Do you need a capture card?
Not if the gaming video is already a file the computer can play into its encoder. A capture card is only a possible part of certain console-to-computer setups, where it helps bring a console’s output into the computer. It does not make YouTube generate viewer playback resolutions; YouTube’s transcoding is what creates multiple output formats.

Common problems and what to check
- The viewer cannot select the resolution you expected: YouTube does not promise an identical quality menu for every broadcast. Check the player after the stream is running and allow for processing; do not advertise a specific playback ladder as guaranteed.
- The stream health is poor or the feed drops: The outgoing settings may be too demanding for the upload connection, or the connection may be inconsistent. Test under broadcast-like conditions and reduce the encoder’s output quality until the connection is stable.
- The stream looks no sharper than the recording: The encoder cannot restore detail missing from a lower-resolution source. Match the output to the source rather than relying on upscaling to create new image detail.
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the broadcast is ready in Studio and that the encoder has the correct, current stream key. Treat the key as a secret and replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration and resolution against YouTube’s archive guidance, then inspect Studio. For long broadcasts, retain a separate local recording rather than relying solely on YouTube’s archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube rerun rather than a one-off broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps playback running, so nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month.

Can I stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast?
Yes. Use an encoder workflow: play the recording into the encoder and send the resulting live feed to YouTube. YouTube documents encoder use for gameplay and screen sharing; it does not describe a dedicated prerecorded-rerun mode.
