A web app’s usual Save button often downloads a new file; it does not, by itself, update the file you opened. In browsers that support the File System Access API, an app can instead ask you to select a destination, obtain a file handle, and write through that handle—with your permission. That makes saving more like a desktop editor, but it is not universal or unrestricted access to your device.
Why a web app’s Save button often makes a copy
A common web-app save flow prepares the edited content and starts a browser download, often through a link with the download attribute. The browser handles that download. The app receives an output file, but this mechanism does not give the page a persistent handle to the file you previously opened or let it overwrite that file. Chrome for Developers describes the download approach as a fallback, not as a way to overwrite an existing file: File System Access API.

What happens to a download with the same name depends on the browser and the user’s download settings. Regardless, a download is a separate save path: it does not mean the web page updated the original file.

The File System Access API gives a web app a permission-gated way to work with a file the user chooses. For a save flow, showSaveFilePicker() opens the browser’s save picker and resolves to a FileSystemFileHandle if the user selects a destination. The app can then create a writable stream, send the new content with write(), and call close() to finish the operation. See Chrome for Developers’ API guide.

- Ask the user to choose a destination. Call
showSaveFilePicker()from a direct user action, such as clicking Save. - Write the output. Use the returned handle’s
createWritable()method, then callwrite()with the file data. - Complete the save. Call
close()on the writable stream. The browser applies its security checks before replacing the selected file.
This API can also support a workflow in which an app retains a handle to a file the user opened and later asks for permission to write to it. The handle is not a blanket grant to read or change arbitrary files: browser permission controls govern access. MDN explains the permission model in its File System API overview.
Download versus writing through a file handle
| Question | Download flow | File System Access API |
|---|---|---|
| Can it update the selected original? | No—not through the download mechanism. It produces a download. | It can write to a user-selected file through a handle, subject to permission and security checks. |
| What does the user do? | The browser handles the download; behavior such as choosing a location depends on browser settings. | The user selects a save destination and grants any required permission. |
| What does the app need? | A way to prepare and download the output. | A supported browser, a user gesture to open the picker, a secure context, and permission to write. |
| What if the preferred path is unavailable? | It is a common fallback for exporting output. | The app can offer a download instead if the API is missing, the user cancels, or permission or writing fails. |
Browser and permission limits
showSaveFilePicker() is not available in every browser. MDN marks it as limited availability, while Chrome for Developers recommends feature detection and describes support across most Chromium browsers. Check the specific method rather than assuming all visitors have it: MDN: showSaveFilePicker() and Chrome for Developers.

- Secure context: the picker requires a secure context.
- User activation: call it in response to a user gesture. If the app does lengthy work first, the browser may no longer consider the call user-initiated and can reject it with a
SecurityError. When the workflow allows, ask for the destination before lengthy processing. - Permission: access to write is governed by browser permission. A selected handle does not mean the app can write without the required authorization.
- Cancellation and errors: users can cancel the picker, and permission or security checks can prevent a write. The app should catch these cases and offer a download or another recovery route.
What happens during the write
Writing through a handle does not necessarily mean the browser modifies the original file in place as each byte is written. MDN documents that createWritable() uses a temporary file; the original is replaced only after the write completes and security checks pass. This helps explain why a failed or interrupted write should not be treated like a successful save. See MDN: FileSystemFileHandle.createWritable().
What a reliable Save button should do
A robust web app can offer the file-handle route where it is available and retain a download route for other cases. It should request the picker directly from the Save action, handle cancellation and write failures, and make clear whether the result updated the selected file or downloaded a separate output. The key distinction is simple: a download gives you an output file; a file handle gives the app a permission-gated route to write to the file you selected.
