Yes—a voice AI can keep speaking while reasoning or waiting for tools, but the details depend on the model and system design. “Same thread” might mean one model handles speech and reasoning in a single session, or that a voice interface keeps the conversation going while a separate backend works. Both patterns are documented today; neither supports the claim that voice models categorically cannot think while streaming.
What “thinking while talking” can mean
In a voice interaction, the user hears streamed speech while the system may also be interpreting the request, forming a response, or waiting for a tool. The system can do that within one realtime session or by assigning the longer work to a separate backend. A spoken filler or partial answer can keep the exchange natural, but it does not necessarily mean the underlying task has finished.

There is no evidence in the cited product documentation of a universal limitation that prevents voice models from reasoning during streaming. Capabilities and event semantics vary by provider, model, and tool configuration.
Three ways to connect speech and reasoning
One realtime model handles speech, reasoning, and tools
A single realtime session can accept speech, reason about it, call tools, and produce spoken output. OpenAI describes its Realtime API as supporting speech, reasoning, and tools in one session, and its prompting guide describes gpt-realtime-2 as a low-latency, reasoning-capable speech-to-speech model. For this design, define the model’s responsibilities, tool behavior, and guardrails in the prompt; the prompting guide also discusses reasoning effort, preambles, commentary and final-response phases, and managing state in long sessions.

Google documents a related option in the Live API: gemini-3.8-live-extended-thinking adds background reasoning and asynchronous tools to a real-time voice session. Google distinguishes this from standard Live voice, which is aimed at immediate dialogue. In extended-thinking mode, the model can speak conversational fillers while the background task runs.
A full-duplex voice interface delegates longer work
In a delegated design, a voice model or interface handles the live, two-way conversation while a separate backend performs longer reasoning or tool work. OpenAI describes this GPT-Live pattern as full-duplex: users can continue speaking while backend work runs. The backend result then returns to the conversational layer for a response.

This separation can keep the user-facing conversation responsive while work proceeds. It also means the application must coordinate context and task status across separate services or components rather than assuming one model owns every part of the interaction.

A chained pipeline gives the application more control
A chained design processes voice in stages—for example, speech recognition, text reasoning or tool calls, then speech generation. The application controls how information passes between stages and when to speak. That can provide control over intermediate text and behavior, but it is not the same as a single continuous speech-to-speech session.

Track the task, not just the audio turn
A client should not infer that background work is finished merely because the model has stopped speaking for a moment or emitted a turn-completion event. The right signal depends on the API and mode.
Gemini Live event semantics
In standard Gemini Live, turnComplete: true means the model has finished speaking and the session is idle. In extended-thinking mode, Google says to track interaction_status: it emits IN_PROGRESS while the overall task continues and IDLE when the task is done. An intermediate audio segment may have turnComplete: true even while the larger task remains in progress.

For extended thinking, Google’s documented tool declaration uses behavior: NON_BLOCKING, allowing the session to continue while a tool runs. The standard and extended-thinking modes use the same WebSocket endpoint. Google documents input audio as 16 kHz PCM and generated model audio as 24 kHz PCM.

Treat audio output, conversational turns, tool execution, and overall task completion as related but distinct states. Build the client state machine around the provider’s documented lifecycle events, and confirm how that provider defines completion for the specific mode you use. Otherwise, the interface can announce that it is done while work is still running—or remain stuck waiting after the task has finished.

| Decision factor | One realtime model | Voice interface with delegated backend | Chained pipeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| First response and conversational feel | Designed for low-latency speech interaction; actual latency depends on the model and task. | Can keep the voice exchange live while backend work runs. | Each stage contributes latency; the application controls when to move between stages. |
| Long or complex reasoning and tools | Depends on the model’s supported reasoning and tool modes; Google’s extended-thinking example supports asynchronous tools. | Longer work can be assigned to the backend while the voice interface remains conversational. | Work is split across stages under application control. |
| Can the user keep speaking during work? | Depends on the model and session behavior. | OpenAI describes its delegated GPT-Live pattern as full-duplex, allowing users to keep talking. | Depends on how the application handles input while other stages run. |
| Where context lives | Primarily within the realtime session and its tool interactions. | Across the voice layer and separate backend; the application must coordinate them. | Across stages, with the application controlling what is passed along. |
| Control over intermediate text or audio | Depends on model and API controls. | The application coordinates what the conversational layer says while the backend works. | Offers stage-by-stage control over intermediate outputs and transitions. |
| Client-state complexity | Must still handle session, tool, and completion events. | Must coordinate the live conversation with backend task status and results. | Must orchestrate each stage and its handoffs. |
This comparison describes architectural trade-offs, not a guarantee of performance. Actual cost, privacy, deployment, and operational requirements depend on the provider and configuration; the cited architecture documentation does not establish a universal ranking on those factors.
What the published benchmark figures do—and do not—show
OpenAI reports that GPT-Realtime-2 (high) scored 15.2% higher on Big Bench Audio than GPT-Realtime-1.5, and that GPT-Realtime-2 (xhigh) scored 13.8% higher on Audio MultiChallenge for instruction following than GPT-Realtime-1.5. These are vendor-reported comparisons in OpenAI’s announcement, not independent verification or proof that all voice models reason while streaming. See OpenAI’s model announcement for the claims and their stated settings.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Prioritize immediate spoken responses: start by evaluating a single realtime model for the task and tools you need.
- Expect lengthy backend work but want users to keep talking: consider a delegated full-duplex interface, and design explicit task-status updates.
- Need precise control over each stage: consider a chained pipeline and account for the latency and orchestration each handoff adds.
- Use asynchronous tools: check whether the chosen model and API support the required execution mode; Google’s cited extended-thinking configuration specifies non-blocking tools.
- Before shipping: verify current model names, supported features, event meanings, audio formats, and tool behavior in the provider’s documentation. These products and APIs can change.
