Telegram’s MTProto API explicitly accepts an empty string to remove an account username. In the Bot API, username fields are optional, so an object may have no username at all. When your integration needs to identify a user or chat, use its numeric ID; use a username only for public name-based discovery or a username link when one exists.
What an empty Telegram username means
Telegram’s MTProto method account.updateUsername changes the current user’s username. Its username parameter accepts a username or an empty string when the username is to be removed. A supplied username must be 5–32 characters and use letters a–z (case-insensitive), digits, or underscores.

This is an API operation, not a rule that every Telegram interface or client library must represent a missing username as "". The Bot API describes username fields as optional. Depending on the API surface and library, a username may be absent rather than present with an empty value.
Which field to use instead
| What you need to do | Use | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Identify a user or chat in an API operation | The object’s numeric id |
An identifier for that API object, not a public handle. |
| Let people find a bot by name or open a bot link | The bot’s username, if it has one | A public name used for search and username-based links such as t.me/bot_username. |
| Represent a username that is unavailable | Handle the optional field as absent; accept an empty value if the API or library supplies one | Do not assume a username exists or that every implementation serializes its absence identically. |
The Bot API documents separate numeric IDs and optional username fields for users and chats. User and chat identifiers may exceed 32 significant bits but have at most 52 significant bits; Telegram recommends a signed 64-bit integer or double-precision float as safe representations. In application code, choose an integer type that preserves the documented range.

When a username link is available
Telegram says people can search for a bot by its username or start a chat through its unique t.me/bot_username link. That link depends on the bot having a username; it is not a substitute public handle for an ordinary user whose username has been removed. Telegram says bot usernames normally require a bot suffix, with exceptions including @stickers, @gif, @wiki, and @bing. See Telegram’s bot introduction.
Account usernames and channel usernames use different methods
Removing an account username and removing a channel or supergroup username are separate operations. Telegram’s MTProto method channels.updateUsername also documents an empty string as the value for removing a channel or supergroup username. Do not use the account method for a channel or supergroup.

Check how your API or library represents a missing username
The exact representation depends on the interface you consume. The Bot API reference marks User.username as optional and describes Chat.username as optional for private chats, supergroups, and channels when available. The documentation does not establish whether every third-party library returns an omitted property, null, or an empty string.
- For Bot API JSON, treat the username as optional and check that it exists before using it.
- For MTProto account username removal, pass the empty string to the documented method when that is the operation you intend.
- For a particular SDK, check its current type declarations and response handling rather than assuming how it serializes an unavailable username.
