The limit depends on the panelboard and feeder ratings, upstream service equipment, proposed solar connection, and the code that applies to the installation. Without those equipment details and a proposed system design, no one can state this home’s allowable solar capacity or say that it needs an upgrade.
Can I put solar on my house and detached garage?
Potentially. Solar modules can be laid out across both roofs, but roof location alone does not determine how the system connects electrically. The designer must plan the two roof areas, conductors, inverters, and point of interconnection together. A garage may be supplied by the house or may have its own service; the title does not establish which applies here.

Photovoltaic cells produce direct current (DC), which an inverter converts to alternating current (AC). New Jersey DEP says residential systems are typically net metered, with the grid supplying the home when solar generation is insufficient. Those system-level facts do not determine whether a particular garage subpanel can accept the proposed connection. New Jersey DEP’s solar overview explains the basic process.

It can, depending on the equipment and connection design. The subpanel is one part of an electrical path: its rating, the feeder and overcurrent protection supplying it, the upstream equipment, and the proposed PV connection all matter. The system’s inverter output and the applicable code calculations also matter. A subpanel’s presence alone does not establish a fixed percentage limit or prove that a panel upgrade is necessary.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
New Jersey currently lists NFPA 70 (the 2023 National Electrical Code) as its electrical subcode, alongside the 2024 New Jersey edition of the International Residential Code for one- and two-family dwellings. The NJ Department of Community Affairs’ current construction codes page reports an adoption date of August 17, 2026. The designer and local code official should confirm the applicable requirements for the project.
NJ DCA’s 2021 New Jersey residential-code document states: “The electrical portion of solar PV systems shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 70.” That document also discusses listed equipment and rooftop structural support, but it is a 2021 edition, not a complete account of today’s adopted requirements. Connection point can matter. A 2019 NJ DCA explanation of the then-referenced 2017 NEC described a supply-side PV connection under stated service-conductor, service-equipment, and bonding conditions. That historical explanation illustrates that a design may involve more than connecting through a subpanel; it is not a current approval pathway or a ruling under New Jersey’s listed 2023 NEC. See NJ DCA’s Spring 2019 Construction Code Communicator.

- Existing service and panels: service disconnect and service rating; main-panel and subpanel labels; bus ratings, breaker limits, and panel schedules.
- Garage supply: feeder conductors and overcurrent protection for the subpanel, the upstream equipment it serves, and whether the garage is supplied from the house or has an independent service.
- Proposed PV system: DC nameplate capacity, inverter AC output and listing, and the exact proposed point of interconnection.
- Two-roof layout: how the house and garage modules are combined, how conductors reach the connection point, and where related equipment will be placed.
- Roof and approvals: structural capacity and roof condition for each roof, applicable equipment clearances and access, and required local permits and inspections.
- Utility process: the electric distribution company serving the property and its current residential interconnection application and approval steps. New Jersey has multiple electric distribution companies, and the utility for this home is not specified.
How should I compare designs if the subpanel is a constraint?
Ask for proposals that state their equipment, connection point, and design assumptions. Compare the actual code-compliant designs rather than assuming that a specific workaround is available. The designer can explain whether a proposal uses the existing panelboard connection or another permitted connection point, changes breakers, or requires a panel or service upgrade.
- Compare total installed cost and schedule alongside the PV capacity that remains usable after equipment and utility limits.
- Check how each design places equipment and routes conductors across the house and garage roofs.
- Tell the designer about planned storage, EV charging, or other significant loads so future capacity is considered rather than treated as an afterthought.
Panelboard capacity and utility-grid hosting capacity are separate questions. NJBPU’s February 4, 2026 release discusses hosting-capacity constraints on key circuits; it does not establish a limit for this home’s panels or utility circuit. Read NJBPU’s release. New Jersey DEP reported that the state ranked 13th nationally for cumulative installed solar PV capacity and second for solar per square mile as of mid-2026; those statewide rankings do not determine an individual home’s allowable system size. See NJ DEP’s solar information.
