A spare Android phone can sometimes take over the job of sending video to a TV—but only if the phone, TV or receiver, and streaming apps support the connection you want. In my case, connecting a spare phone was enough for me to stop using my Fire TV Stick. That is my experience, not a guarantee that every Android phone can replace a streaming device.
What changed when I connected a spare Android phone to my TV
I stopped reaching for my Fire TV Stick after I found I could use a spare Android phone with my television. The appeal was straightforward: use a device I already had rather than rely on a separate streaming stick for the viewing I wanted.

That outcome depends on the hardware and apps involved. Android phones can send supported app video to a compatible receiver, mirror their screens to some wireless displays, or connect by HDMI when the phone supports video output. Those are different methods, and none is guaranteed just because a phone has Android or a TV is described as smart.

Choose the connection method your phone and TV support
| Method | What appears on the TV | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cast app casting | Video or audio from a supported app is sent to a compatible TV or receiver. | Confirm Cast support for the exact TV or receiver and the app. Google says many TVs released after 2020 support Cast, but model support varies. Android.com’s phone-to-TV guide recommends checking with the manufacturer. |
| Miracast screen mirroring | The phone’s screen is mirrored to a compatible wireless display. | Both the phone and TV or receiver must support Miracast. Motorola says its supported implementation does not require a local Wi-Fi network; that does not mean every Android phone supports it. See Motorola’s Smart Connect instructions. |
| USB-C-to-HDMI | The phone’s video output is sent through a cable to the TV’s HDMI input. | Check the exact phone model for USB-C video output. A USB-C port alone is not proof of support. Motorola notes that a supported wired connection can reduce latency, but some apps may not work on an external display. Motorola’s instructions explain the limits. |
How to connect your Android phone to your TV
Start by deciding whether you want to play content from an app, show the whole phone screen, or use a cable. Then confirm the exact compatibility before changing settings or buying an adapter.

- For app casting: Check the TV or receiver’s specifications or manufacturer support page for Google Cast, and check that the app supports casting. Open the app on the phone and use its Cast control to select the receiver when it is available. Google’s guidance says support varies by model: Android.com: How to Connect Your Phone Wirelessly to Your TV.
- For screen mirroring: Confirm that both devices support Miracast, then use the phone’s screen-sharing or wireless-display controls and the TV’s corresponding receiver mode. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Motorola’s documentation describes the feature for supported Motorola phones, not Android phones generally: Get started with Smart Connect.
- For HDMI: Verify in the phone manufacturer’s specifications that the model supports video output over USB-C (or the relevant supported connection), then connect an appropriate adapter or cable to the TV’s HDMI input and select that input on the TV. Android’s connection guide lists HDMI with a USB-C or micro-USB adapter as a wired option: Android.com’s guide.
If wireless support is missing from the TV, a compatible external receiver may be an option. First check whether the television already has the receiver capability you need; buying another device is not automatically necessary.
What a spare phone does not guarantee
- USB-C does not guarantee HDMI output. Motorola explicitly warns that not all phones support video out through USB-C. Verify the precise model before buying an adapter.
- A smart TV does not necessarily support Google Cast or Miracast. Check the TV’s model documentation rather than relying on the “smart TV” label.
- App casting and screen mirroring are not the same. Casting sends supported media from an app to a receiver; mirroring displays the phone screen. Apps can limit external display or mirroring, so a method that works for one app may not work for another.
- A phone is not automatically a full replacement for a streaming stick. Whether it meets your needs depends on the apps you use, available receiver support, and your willingness to use the phone as the source.
When a separate streaming device may still make sense
If your TV lacks the receiver support needed for your preferred wireless method, a compatible streaming device can add that capability. Google’s requirements for its streaming devices are specific to that hardware: they include an Android device running Android 9.0 or later to set up Google Home, an HDCP 1.3-or-higher display (HDCP 2.2 for 4K), and, for 4K content, a 4K-capable display plus internet of at least 20 Mbps. These are not universal requirements for phone-to-TV connections. See Google’s requirements for Chromecast and Google TV Streamer devices.

Those requirements also illustrate why a phone connection and a dedicated receiver are not interchangeable in every setup. Before deciding to retire a streaming stick, check whether the phone method supports the apps and viewing you rely on. I was able to make the spare-phone arrangement work for my needs; other setups may call for keeping a dedicated receiver or choosing a different connection method.
