Yes, a Raspberry Pi can send 1080p video to YouTube, but whether a particular setup will stay live around the clock depends on its model, encoding workload, power, cooling, network and recovery behavior. Raspberry Pi’s published results show that Pi 5 can encode 1080p30 in a specified low-latency test; older models have a hardware H.264 encoder. Neither fact certifies a complete Raspberry Pi setup for uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Test your actual source and equipment before relying on it.
What “1080p 24/7” requires
There are two separate questions: can the Pi encode and send the video, and can the whole system keep the broadcast going continuously? The first is feasible in a suitable configuration. The second depends on the complete build—including the camera or capture device, software, internet connection, power supply, cooling and what happens after an interruption.

A 1080p30 target is a practical starting point if you do not need a higher frame rate. Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 5 result concerns real-time 1080p30 encoding, not every resolution, frame rate, video source or concurrent workload. A camera feed with conversion or overlays, for example, may impose work beyond encoding alone.
Which Raspberry Pi model should you use?
| Model generation | H.264 encoding path | What that means for 1080p streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Before Raspberry Pi 5 | Raspberry Pi says all earlier models included a hardware H.264 encoder in the VideoCore GPU. | Hardware encoding is available, but the capability of a complete setup still depends on the model, source, software and other workload. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | H.264 encoding is software-based; Pi 5 has no hardware encoder. | Raspberry Pi’s 2026 low-latency encoding note reports real-time 1080p30 in its described test, with encoding using 60–90% of one CPU core. This is a specific test result, not a guarantee for every build. |
Do not assume that Pi 5 is automatically too slow or that an older model will handle any stream reliably. Confirm which encoder your software is actually using, then test the intended resolution, frame rate, camera or capture path, audio and any other processes running on the Pi.

Configure YouTube’s ingest settings for 1080p30
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum bitrate and 14 Mbps as recommended. These are ingest settings, not a promise that a given internet connection can sustain them. Your upload connection must remain stable at the selected bitrate, with room for normal variation.
- Codec and rate control: H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR).
- Bitrate: Choose a sustainable rate in YouTube’s 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended range for H.264 1080p30.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Transport: Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
- Video: Use progressive video for the 1080p30 target.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube and copy its stream key into your encoder’s live-stream settings. Treat that key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public screenshot or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s setup instructions and controls can change, so follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio when creating the stream.

Prepare the Pi for sustained operation
Power the board and peripherals correctly
Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/3A supply for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and 5V/5A for Raspberry Pi 5. Choose the supply for your exact board and account for the power draw of the camera, USB capture device and other peripherals as well. A supply recommendation alone does not establish that a whole setup will run continuously.
Watch temperature and throttling
Raspberry Pi documents an 85°C SoC thermal limit, with progressive Arm throttling from 80°C to 85°C. Throttling reduces performance as the board approaches that range. A heatsink or small fan can reduce throttling and improve performance, but cooling needs depend on the board, enclosure, ambient temperature and workload. Monitor temperature and performance during a representative test rather than assuming that a cooling accessory guarantees stability.

Make the network part of the test
A speed-test result is not proof of sustained upload stability. Run the Pi on the connection and at the bitrate you intend to use, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing. YouTube recommends testing with comparable motion and audio: a static image may not reveal the same problems as the actual video content.
Test before depending on a 24/7 stream
- Identify the exact build. Record the Pi model, operating system, camera or capture device, video format, encoder software, audio path and any overlays or other processes.
- Confirm the encoding path. Check that your software is using the H.264 encoder available on that model. On Pi 5, plan for software encoding rather than assuming hardware H.264 support.
- Start with a defined target. If suitable for the use case, configure 1080p30 and apply YouTube’s H.264 ingest guidance for CBR, bitrate, keyframes and RTMPS.
- Check power and temperature under load. Use the model-recommended supply, include peripherals and watch for throttling while the actual stream is running.
- Run a representative extended trial. Include the usual motion and audio, observe YouTube stream health, and check whether the system remains stable over the period relevant to your use.
- Plan for interruption and recording. Do not assume the stream will automatically recover after a power or network failure; verify what your software does and how you will restart it. Decide separately how to retain a local recording if you need one.
No cited Raspberry Pi or YouTube guidance establishes that a particular end-to-end Pi build has passed a 24/7 endurance test. Your own trial is what can show whether your combination is suitable.

Does YouTube archive a 24-hour stream?
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full, so do not rely on a complete 24-hour YouTube archive if the recording is essential. Check YouTube’s current controls and arrange separate local recording if you need a dependable copy of the full programme.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCopyright and channel considerations
Before looping a video, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed to broadcast its picture and audio on YouTube. Music, performances, footage and other included material can raise rights issues even when you own the recording. A stream being technically continuous does not establish that its contents meet YouTube’s rules or any channel monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s current policies and use a copyright checklist before going live.

Common problems and what to check
- Video stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check whether the upload connection sustains the configured bitrate; test with the actual motion and audio, and lower the target bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it reliably.
- The Pi slows down or encoding falls behind: Confirm the selected resolution and frame rate, check for extra conversion or overlay work, and verify which encoder is in use. On Pi 5, software encoding can use substantial CPU capacity; Raspberry Pi’s reported 60–90% figure applies to its described 1080p30 low-latency test.
- Performance worsens during a long run: Check temperature and throttling, airflow, power supply and peripheral load. Raspberry Pi documents progressive throttling between 80°C and 85°C.
- The broadcast stops after an internet or power interruption: Determine whether your encoder reconnects automatically and test recovery rather than assuming it. The cited YouTube guidance recommends monitoring stream health but does not establish a universal reconnect guarantee.
- The full-day archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed full archive of a longer continuous broadcast. Use a separate recording plan when retention matters.
