For multiple local files, use OBS’s VLC Video Source, check Loop Playlist, VLC installation and source visibility. If the stream itself is unhealthy too, use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages to investigate the encoder and connection.
First, identify what actually stopped
- At the transition, check OBS. Is OBS still live, and does its preview or output still show the intended scene? Note whether the video froze, went black, or the scene itself disappeared.
- Check YouTube separately. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect stream health and any timestamped status or error messages. YouTube exposes stream-health guidance there; compare the time of a reported problem with when the playlist stopped. See your live stream’s metrics and YouTube live-stream error messages.
- Choose the diagnostic path. If OBS remains live with the scene present but the clip does not advance, check the media source, playlist entries and visibility. If OBS output or YouTube stream health is also degraded or interrupted, check encoder and connection health as well.
A stopped clip does not by itself establish an ingest or network fault. Likewise, a healthy-looking OBS preview does not rule out a separate problem sending the stream to YouTube.
Use the right OBS source for the job

OBS documents Media Source for individual files and VLC Video Source for playlists. The source controls do not promise a gapless or seamless transition for every file and system. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide describes the available options.
Fix the playlist source step by step
1. Confirm VLC and matching architecture
VLC Video Source appears in OBS only when VLC is installed. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. If VLC Video Source is missing, install VLC that matches your OBS architecture, then reopen OBS and check the Sources add menu before rebuilding the scene.

2. Check the playlist and repeat setting
Select the VLC Video Source in the intended scene and inspect its properties. Confirm the expected files are in the playlist and enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the final item. This setting controls what happens after the list ends; it does not establish why playback stopped at an intermediate boundary.
3. Make sure the source is visible when it should play
OBS’s documented default VLC Video Source visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Check the eye/visibility control in the Sources list and confirm the source is present in the active scene. If scene changes hide it, choose a visibility behavior that fits the production—for example, whether playback should stop while hidden or continue. Do not assume the source will keep playing through a scene in which it is hidden.

4. Find out whether one entry triggers the stop
Test a short playlist locally and note which file comes immediately before the failure. Try the suspect file by itself in OBS and VLC, then try a short list that includes it. If the failure follows one entry, check that file and how it is being opened before changing unrelated stream settings. This is a diagnostic isolation technique, not a claim that a particular file format or defect is a universal cause; the cited OBS guidance does not specify a universal validation procedure for transition faults.

If the outgoing stream is also unhealthy
When OBS output or YouTube’s stream-health indicators show a problem at the same time, follow the encoder path rather than treating the playlist as the only cause.
- Check the encoder’s picture and sound. YouTube advises confirming that the encoder is sending the expected output and reviewing encoder errors.
- Check CPU load and performance symptoms. If OBS is lagging or overloaded, inspect the encoding and rendering symptoms before changing settings. OBS’s performance guidance discusses GPU rendering bottlenecks; reduce expensive scene sources or simplify the scene only when those symptoms point to a rendering problem. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can be a targeted fallback when performance evidence supports it, not a general playlist-transition fix.
- Check outbound internet strength. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports stream problems, test the outbound connection and follow the status guidance shown in Live Control Room.
- Preview before going live and monitor quality. YouTube recommends checking the stream before starting and watching stream quality while live. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and YouTube live streaming tips.
Do not buy or upgrade hardware solely because a playlist stopped at a file boundary. The sources cited here do not establish a hardware upgrade as a general cure.
