Sometimes—but not as a like-for-like replacement. A Raspberry Pi running Kodi can act as a TV media player for local, network, and some internet media. The available official documentation does not establish a Pi running Kodi as a native Google Cast receiver for phone apps. If you want to tap Cast in an app and send playback to your TV, keep or choose a Chromecast; if you want a configurable media center with its own TV interface, a Pi may fit.
What a Raspberry Pi can replace
Kodi offers an official Raspberry Pi download and describes itself as a free, open-source media player for videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media from local, network, and internet sources. Its “10-foot user interface” is designed for televisions and remote controls. A Pi configured with Kodi can therefore serve as a small media-player computer connected to a TV.

That can stand in for some Chromecast uses when your goal is to browse and play media through a player interface on the TV—for example, from files on storage or a network location. It is not proof that every streaming app, online service, protected video, or media format will work. Kodi’s Raspberry Pi download page describes the software and its intended interface.

A Kodi media center and a Chromecast have different roles. Kodi runs as the player you operate on the Pi; Chromecast is a receiver in the Google Cast workflow, typically selected and controlled from a supported app on a phone or browser. Plex’s documentation describes its casting workflow as sending media from Plex Media Server directly to Chromecast while the app that started playback acts as controller. Its supported-apps list names Android, iOS, and Plex Web App in Chrome as casting initiators, and does not list Raspberry Pi or Kodi as a Chromecast receiver.

So do not buy a Pi expecting arbitrary phone apps to discover it through their Cast button. The official materials cited here do not establish that a Raspberry Pi running Kodi advertises itself as a native Google Cast target. A Pi may be useful for other media-center or server roles, but those are not the same as receiving Google Cast. See Plex’s casting explanation and its supported Plex Companion apps list.
Choose by the way you want to watch
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Cast in supported phone apps and control playback from the phone | Chromecast or another supported Google Cast receiver | This is the receiver-and-controller workflow documented for Chromecast; Pi/Kodi equivalence is not established. |
| Browse media on a TV-oriented interface | Raspberry Pi running Kodi | Kodi is a media player with a TV and remote-control interface, and supports local, network, and internet media sources. |
| Play files from a media server | Depends on the client and media; Pi/Kodi may work as a player | Format, audio, subtitles, and client capabilities affect whether media can play directly or needs conversion. |
| Run a server or make files available to another device | Raspberry Pi configured for that server role | Serving media is different from receiving a Cast session; the playback device still matters. |
Compatibility depends on the media and the setup
Neither “Kodi supports media” nor “Plex can stream it” guarantees that every file will play smoothly on every Pi. Plex distinguishes direct play, direct stream, and transcoding; the client’s capabilities and the media’s characteristics—including format and subtitles—affect the playback path. Check support for the specific client, server, video, audio, and subtitle combination rather than assuming a Pi can decode or transcode any file in real time. Plex’s streaming overview explains those playback paths.

For comparison, Google’s requirements for its streaming devices say 4K playback requires a 4K-capable display, HDCP 2.2, and at least 20 Mbps high-speed internet; HDR also requires an HDR-capable display. These are Google device requirements, not a guarantee about Raspberry Pi output or decoding. Check your Pi model, software, media, and display separately. Google’s device requirements provide the relevant specifications.

Setup and networking considerations
A Pi replacement means installing and configuring a media-center computer, not simply adding a receiver to an existing Cast workflow. The exact setup depends on the board and its wireless hardware. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that some models and wireless adapters do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi, so check the specifications of your exact board or adapter before relying on that band. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation covers setup and wireless-module caveats.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
- Choose a Pi if you are comfortable configuring software and want a customizable media center with its own interface.
- Choose Chromecast if your essential requirement is the established Google Cast workflow from supported phone apps.
- Before setting up a Pi, confirm that your content source, media formats, audio, subtitles, network, display, and control method fit the intended use.
