Yes—a Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible way to encode a simple rain-sounds YouTube livestream, especially with a static or slow-moving visual. But the Pi’s specifications do not prove that a particular setup will stay live without interruption for 24/7. Power, cooling, upload bandwidth, network stability, software recovery and the rights to your audio and visuals all matter.
A sensible starting point is 720p at 30 fps, H.264 video at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and AAC audio. Treat that as YouTube’s recommended ingestion profile, not a Pi 5 performance guarantee.

What a Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do
A rain loop with a mostly still image is a comparatively modest streaming workload: it avoids the motion and production complexity of multiple camera feeds. That is a practical inference, not a verified benchmark of a Pi 5 running this exact stream continuously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYouTube accepts encoder-based live broadcasts and supports H.264 video with AAC audio. For a straightforward setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a conservative choice. Raspberry Pi has published a technical paper on H.264 encoding performance on Pi 5-series computers, but no result from that paper is asserted here, and no controlled 24/7 test of this exact setup establishes uptime or maximum encoding resolution and frame rate.

Do not treat the Pi 5 specification’s 4Kp60 HEVC decoder as evidence of HEVC encoding capability. Decoding and encoding are different tasks.
Prepare the Pi and the stream
Use suitable power and cooling
Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply and says the Pi 5 performs best with active cooling. An under-powered supply can cause problems, so use a supply appropriate for the board and its attached devices. See Raspberry Pi 5 specifications and guidance.

Choose a simple visual and audio loop
Start with a static or low-motion image and a continuous rain recording. This keeps the production simple, but it does not remove the need to test the encoder, audio continuity, network and stream health. Before uploading, confirm you have the rights to use both the recording and the visual, including for livestreaming and any intended monetization. YouTube monetization eligibility and channel status are separate questions; neither is determined by the Pi.

| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Video resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | A reasonable initial profile for a simple loop; this is not a verified Pi 5 maximum. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A straightforward supported encoder path. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps | YouTube recommends this H.264 bitrate for 720p30 live ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC | YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio formats. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS, if supported by your encoder | YouTube recommends encrypted RTMP. |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a claim that every encoder interface uses identical labels or that the Pi will sustain this profile under all conditions. Check your encoder’s documentation for the exact field names. YouTube’s current live encoder settings provide its codec and configuration guidance.

Configure YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming if needed. In YouTube, open Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable streaming. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In Live Control Room, create the event and retrieve the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. On the Pi, configure the encoder to send the H.264 video and AAC audio to YouTube’s server URL using the stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Apply the starting profile. Set 720p30, H.264, 8 Mbps, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS when available in the encoder.
- Preview before going live. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the image is correct and rain audio is present at a steady level. Use Live Control Room’s preview and stream health indicators before making the event public.
- Run a long-duration test. Observe the stream for extended periods under the conditions in which it will operate. Check for disconnections, audio gaps, overheating, power issues and changing upload capacity; launching successfully once is not evidence of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring it while it runs. Its encoder setup guidance covers the Control Room workflow and stream setup.
Plan for upload bandwidth and interruptions
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom. For an 8 Mbps video bitrate, that means the connection needs capacity beyond the video’s configured rate; audio and other network use also consume bandwidth. Measure upload performance during the hours the stream will run, not just once at a convenient time. A stable wired connection is preferable when practical.

A disrupted connection can interrupt the broadcast. Test how your chosen encoder behaves after a network outage and whether it reconnects and resumes sending to YouTube. Monitor the stream health indicators and audio/video quality rather than assuming a running process means viewers are receiving a healthy feed. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and streaming tips explain its recommendations on testing, bandwidth and monitoring.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Server URL, stream key, event status or encoder output settings | Recheck the event’s ingest details in Live Control Room, verify the encoder is sending to the matching URL and key, and confirm the stream is enabled. |
| Frequent disconnects or unstable stream health | Upload capacity, Wi-Fi or wired link, power, or encoder recovery behavior | Measure upload speed during operating hours, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, prefer a stable wired link where feasible, check the power supply and test reconnection after an outage. |
| Video looks poor or YouTube reports encoding issues | Bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval or CPU/thermal behavior | Return to the 720p30 H.264 starting profile, CBR, 8 Mbps and 2-second keyframes. Check cooling and test before raising resolution or frame rate. |
| Audio is missing, clipped or interrupted | Audio input/configuration, source file or encoder routing | Confirm AAC output is selected, verify the rain source plays continuously, and listen to the YouTube preview and live output. |
| Stream stops after a power or internet interruption | Local power/network dependency and lack of automatic recovery | Identify whether the Pi rebooted, the connection failed, or the encoder did not reconnect. Test recovery deliberately before relying on the setup unattended. |
Cost and reliability trade-offs
A Pi-based setup requires the board, suitable power, cooling, storage and a dependable local internet connection. It gives you direct control of the encoder, but the stream depends on your home power and network, and you are responsible for monitoring and recovery. The available official specifications do not establish a Pi 5’s expected 24/7 uptime or a maximum live-encoding profile for this particular workload.

If you need a stream to continue without leaving a computer or board running at home, a cloud service is an alternative to maintaining a local encoder. Compare the recurring service cost with local hardware and connectivity costs, and consider who handles recovery when YouTube or the network drops the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your rain video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube, and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
