A flood of calls or texts does not prove that someone accessed your phone or personal information. The danger depends on what happens alongside the flood: you might be tricked into clicking a harmful link or sharing a verification code, an attacker might take over your phone number, or repeated sign-in prompts might pressure you into approving access. Treat the barrage as a reason to pause and check—not as proof of a breach.
What “phone bombing” can mean—and what it cannot tell you
People use “phone bombing” informally to describe a sudden flood of unwanted calls or texts. That volume can be disruptive or serve as a distraction, but it does not reveal whether an account or device has been compromised. Look for a separate warning sign, such as an unexpected password-reset message, a suspicious link, an unrequested sign-in prompt, a carrier notice about a SIM change, or an unexplained loss of mobile service.

Repeated authentication-app notifications are a related but different tactic, usually called push bombing or MFA fatigue. The attacker hopes the recipient will approve a sign-in request just to stop the prompts. CISA describes push bombing, SIM swaps, and telecom-protocol exploitation among threats to multifactor authentication (CISA guidance on MFA).
How a barrage could become an information-security problem
A deceptive message or link
A spam text can impersonate a familiar company or agency and ask you to provide a password, account number, or Social Security number. Some messages may lead to malware that can steal personal or financial information. The risk comes from interacting with the message or harmful software—not from the number of calls or texts arriving. The FTC advises people not to click unexpected links or respond with sensitive information (FTC: How to Recognize and Report Spam Text Messages).

A SIM swap or number port-out
In a SIM swap, a criminal impersonates a customer and persuades the wireless carrier to move the customer’s number to a SIM or device the criminal controls. A port-out scam similarly moves the number to another provider. If successful, the attacker may receive calls and texts intended for you, including SMS sign-in codes. The FCC says a successful SIM swap can also expose customer proprietary network information (CPNI); that does not mean every person receiving a flood of calls can automatically see your contacts, photos, or identity documents (FCC: Cell Phone Fraud; FTC: SIM Swap Scams).
Repeated sign-in prompts
If authentication prompts arrive when you are not trying to sign in, someone may be attempting to access an account or trying to wear you down into approving a request. Deny prompts you did not initiate, and use the account provider’s official website or support channel to secure the account. Never approve one as a way to make the notifications stop.

Details a caller already knows
A caller’s knowledge of your name or address does not show that the phone-bombing event revealed that information. Scammers may already have bought or stolen personal details and use them to make a story sound credible. Verify the caller independently rather than treating familiarity as proof of legitimacy; the FTC warns that caller ID can be faked (FTC: Unwanted Calls and Text Messages).
What to do while the calls or texts are arriving
- Do not engage with unexpected requests. Avoid opening links, replying with personal or financial details, or sharing one-time verification codes. If a caller claims to represent a bank, carrier, government agency, or company, hang up and contact it through its official app or website, or a trusted number on a recent statement or card—not contact details supplied in the unexpected call or message.
- Deny unfamiliar authentication prompts. If you did not initiate the sign-in, reject the request and go to the service’s official site or support channel to check the account.
- Reduce the nuisance volume if needed. Use your phone’s built-in call or message filtering, or carrier tools. Filtering can make the barrage easier to manage, but it does not establish that an account is secure or prevent someone from taking over your number. The FTC’s guidance includes ways to report and limit unwanted messages and calls (FTC: Unwanted Calls and Text Messages).
- Report suspicious texts. Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM), use the messaging app’s report option, or report suspected scams to the FTC (FTC reporting guidance).
What to do if your number or an account may have been taken over
Sudden loss of mobile service or an unexpected notice that a SIM was activated can indicate that your number has been moved. Contact your carrier immediately to regain control of the number. After service is restored, change passwords for important accounts and check bank, credit-card, and other financial accounts for activity you did not authorize. Contact the relevant institutions if you find unfamiliar changes or charges. If you gave a scammer sensitive information, IdentityTheft.gov provides tailored identity-theft recovery steps. The FTC’s SIM-swap guidance covers the carrier and account-recovery steps (FTC: SIM Swap Scams).

Reduce the risk of number takeover and account compromise
- Protect your wireless account. Set a PIN or password on the carrier account and ask the carrier about number-transfer protections. Available controls depend on the provider.
- Use stronger sign-in methods where supported. For important accounts, consider an authentication app or a FIDO2 security key instead of SMS verification. CISA identifies phishing-resistant MFA as the strongest form of MFA, while the FTC cautions that text-message verification may not stop a SIM swap (CISA MFA guidance; FTC SIM-swap guidance).
- Plan for recovery. Check that the account supports your chosen method and keep a securely stored backup method available in case you lose access to a device or key. A security key is optional, works only with compatible services, and does not stop unwanted calls or texts.
- Limit public exposure of account-recovery details where practical. A full name, address, or phone number shared publicly may help an identity thief answer security questions, according to the FTC’s SIM-swap guidance.
The right authentication choice depends on what each service supports, resistance to phishing and number takeover, and whether you can recover access securely if a device or key is lost.
