What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—if your NAS can run FFmpeg continuously, handle the chosen stream settings, and maintain a reliable upload connection. FFmpeg can loop a file indefinitely, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: capacity depends on the exact NAS, and network, power, process, or YouTube ingest failures can still stop the stream.
How the NAS-to-YouTube workflow works
The NAS stores or reads the prerecorded video and runs FFmpeg to send it to YouTube Live. You configure FFmpeg with YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping and -re for reading a file at its native frame rate, which is useful when sending file input in real time.

- Make the media available. Put the video on storage the NAS can read reliably, and confirm the file’s format and intended output quality.
- Confirm FFmpeg is supported. Check documentation for your exact NAS model and operating system for a native FFmpeg package or supported container, including the codecs you need.
- Set up a YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and key, then configure FFmpeg to send the output there. YouTube’s encoder guide describes this workflow.
- Test before relying on it. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview, verify that playback is accessible, and monitor video and audio quality as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming tips.
FFmpeg loop command: what it does and does not do
This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run command:
Recommended Free Tools
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 ... OUTPUT
Replace the input and output with values for your setup. The output muxer, codecs, bitrate, stream URL, key handling, and any transcoding options depend on the media and YouTube settings. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so put input options such as -re and -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i. The loop option repeats the input; it does not by itself reconnect after a failure or ensure 24/7 uptime. See the FFmpeg CLI documentation for option behavior.

Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, shared screenshots, and logs where practical. YouTube explains stream-key management in its live stream settings guide.
Check whether your NAS can sustain the stream
- FFmpeg and codecs: Availability varies by NAS model and operating system. Verify the exact package or container support and the codecs required by your source and output; no universal NAS compatibility is established.
- Processing load: If FFmpeg transcodes, the NAS needs enough sustained CPU or supported hardware-encoding capacity for the selected resolution and frame rate. Sending video without re-encoding can have a different processing demand, but the resulting stream still needs to be compatible. Do not infer performance for a particular model without its documentation or testing.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends upload headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate. A connection that can briefly reach the target rate may still be unreliable; YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream. Check the streaming tips and assess the connection you will actually use.
- Output compatibility: YouTube’s encoder settings list H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP variant, where the encoder supports it; see its RTMPS guidance.
- Recovery and power: Consider what happens if FFmpeg exits, the NAS reboots, power is lost, the router or ISP fails, or YouTube’s ingest connection drops. The loop option does not prove that a process will restart or that a reconnect will succeed.
YouTube eligibility, security, and archives
Technical setup does not override channel eligibility or content rules. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to enable live streaming. Check Live Control Room for your channel’s status before preparing a broadcast; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music and images, and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream and content policies. Do not assume that looping a recording makes copyrighted material permissible or that technical compliance guarantees policy compliance.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one automatically archived video; the encoder guide does not fully specify what happens to longer sessions. If an archive matters, verify current behavior and plan session boundaries or a separate recording.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot find or open the video | Confirm the input path, file access permissions, and that the NAS can read the storage location. | Test with the file at a stable local NAS path and verify the exact filename and permissions. |
| FFmpeg starts but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Check the ingest URL, stream key, output format, and whether the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream. | Retrieve the current connection details from Live Control Room, protect the key, and confirm the encoder output is configured as YouTube expects. |
| Video or audio is rejected or looks wrong | Compare codecs, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate with the selected YouTube settings. | Adjust the output for the actual target quality and test a preview before leaving it unattended. |
| Stream drops during operation | Check upload stability and headroom, as well as NAS, router, ISP, power, and ingest interruptions. | Monitor the connection and process, then test the recovery behavior you have configured; looping input alone is not reconnection handling. |
| NAS runs hot or cannot keep up | Determine whether FFmpeg is transcoding and whether the model can sustain that workload. | Reduce the target workload or use hardware supported by the exact model; do not assume a NAS can encode a given quality without evidence. |

Does FFmpeg’s infinite loop mean the YouTube stream will never stop?
No. It repeats the input file, but does not guarantee that FFmpeg, the NAS, the network, or YouTube’s ingest connection stays available.
