Yes, but only if your NAS can run compatible encoder software that loops the prerecorded video and continuously sends it to YouTube Live. A NAS that can store or play a video is not necessarily capable of encoding and broadcasting it around the clock. Check support for your exact NAS model and software—including looping, restart, and reconnection behavior—before relying on it.
What a NAS needs to do
YouTube Live expects an encoder: software or hardware that converts video into a digital format and sends it to YouTube. For a prerecorded 24/7 broadcast, the encoder must also play the selected file or playlist repeatedly and keep sending the feed.

Those are separate jobs from storing and playing media locally. Confirm that the NAS can run an encoder compatible with YouTube Live, that the encoder supports looping prerecorded files, and that the NAS can sustain the chosen encoding settings. Do not infer those capabilities from a NAS media server or camera-broadcast feature alone.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set up and test the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel and check for any account restrictions. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned launch.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s ingest details in compatible encoder software on the NAS. Choose an RTMPS ingest path where the encoder supports it, and confirm that the selected software supports the required codec and settings. YouTube’s current guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS encoders and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to codec and protocol constraints.
- Set the prerecorded source to loop. Select the intended file or playlist and verify that playback returns to the beginning without stopping the broadcast. Do not assume every encoder listed as compatible with YouTube supports looping.
- Choose sustainable stream settings. Match resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the source, encoder capacity, and sustained upload speed. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are ingest bitrate recommendations, not the upload speed to buy for an internet plan.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure sustained upload capacity under realistic conditions; a plan’s advertised download speed does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream. YouTube cautions that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- Test the entire chain. Check video and audio on the live watch page, encoder health, file-loop behavior, and recovery after a brief network interruption or encoder restart. Also verify that the encoder starts after a NAS reboot and can access the media files unattended.
NAS-specific checks before leaving it unattended
- Exact model and operating system: Confirm that the intended encoder is available and supported for your NAS, rather than assuming support across a brand’s product range.
- Encoding capacity and cooling: Confirm that the device can sustain your selected settings. A successful short playback test does not establish that it can encode continuously without overheating or slowing other NAS tasks.
- Process recovery: Check whether the encoder restarts after a crash or reboot and reconnects after an internet interruption. NAS storage alone does not provide those recovery behaviors.
- Media access: Check that the encoder can read the files and playlist from the intended storage location, including after a restart.
- Power continuity: A correctly sized UPS may bridge a short power interruption for the NAS and network equipment. It cannot guarantee internet availability or sustain a prolonged outage.
Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature that sends selected camera feeds to YouTube using an RTMP path and key, with H.264 support. That is evidence of camera-to-YouTube broadcasting in that feature; it does not establish that the feature loops prerecorded files. Verify prerecorded-file support separately for the exact NAS application you intend to use.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Plan for YouTube’s long-stream behavior
YouTube’s help documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of one complete replay or unlimited rewind history. If you need an archive, plan and verify that separately.
Compare the practical options
| Option | Strength | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Runs a prerecorded YouTube stream from the cloud, so a home encoder does not have to stay on; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. | Review the upload workflow, storage allowance, plan length, and whether a cloud service fits your file-control and archive needs. |
| Encoder on the NAS | Uses existing storage and always-on hardware. | Verify model and OS support, encoding capacity, looping, recovery, cooling, and upload stability. |
| Separate local encoder host | Keeps encoding work off the NAS and may offer a wider choice of encoder software. | Account for power use, media access from the NAS, and unattended restart and reconnection behavior. |
Compare the full setup burden, recurring costs, control of the files and stream, encoding needs, failure recovery, and archive requirements. No option is universally best: the NAS route is reasonable when the exact model and software pass the checks above; a separate host can avoid loading the NAS; a cloud service reduces dependence on home encoding hardware.
