Yes—if your MacBook supports the displays you need and a dock has the ports your desk requires, you can leave the laptop connected at your desk and unplug it when you need to go. But the dock does not turn every MacBook into a desktop with the same display capacity: Apple says external-display support varies by Mac model, so check your exact model and chip before planning a monitor setup.
What changes when you use a MacBook at a desk?
A dock consolidates connections for a desk setup. Instead of attaching each compatible display and peripheral directly to the MacBook, you connect the dock to the computer and connect the desk equipment to the dock. When you leave, you can disconnect the host cable and take the laptop with you. Whether that replaces your desktop depends on the equipment you use and the MacBook’s capabilities—not on the dock alone.

Before choosing a dock, list the displays and peripherals you want to keep connected: monitors, external storage, keyboard and mouse, network cable, card readers, and audio devices. Compare that list with the dock’s ports, then check the MacBook’s display support and the dock’s host-charging specification. A port’s shape alone does not establish that it supports every device or display mode you have in mind.
Will your MacBook run the displays you want?
Start with the MacBook’s exact model and chip. Apple’s Mac display guidance explains how to connect and configure displays, and notes that external-display support depends on the Mac model. CalDigit likewise publishes host-specific display compatibility information for its docks; a dock’s maximum specification is not a promise that every MacBook can use it.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Identify the MacBook model and chip. Use the exact configuration rather than relying on a family name such as “MacBook Pro.”
- Check the host’s supported external displays. Confirm the number of displays, resolution, and refresh rate for that specific Mac.
- Check the dock’s compatibility notes and connection conditions. Confirm the desired display arrangement is supported when connected through that dock.
- Connect and configure the displays. Follow Apple’s instructions for connecting displays and adjusting their arrangement and settings.
For example, CalDigit lists the TS4 as supporting a single display up to 8K at 30Hz when the host supports it. Its product information also describes up to dual 6K at 60Hz on specified M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra configurations. Those are manufacturer-listed capabilities tied to the host and connection conditions, not universal MacBook limits or guarantees. See CalDigit’s TS4 specifications and compatibility notes.
What to look for in a dock
Enough ports for the desk
Count the connections you will actually use, including any that must remain available for occasional devices. As one example, CalDigit lists the TS4 with 18 ports: three Thunderbolt 4 ports, three USB-C 10Gb/s ports, five USB-A 10Gb/s ports, DisplayPort 1.4, SD and microSD card readers, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, and audio connections. Check the manufacturer’s full port and compatibility list against your own peripherals; the number of ports alone does not tell you whether a particular connection fits your workflow.

Host charging and the desk connection
If you want one cable to connect the MacBook to the desk setup, verify that the dock’s host connection and power delivery suit your MacBook and intended arrangement. CalDigit specifies up to 98W host power delivery for the TS4. That is the dock’s stated maximum, not a claim that every MacBook will charge at that rate under every workload.

Also check the computer’s ports and the cable or adapter needed for your connection. Apple provides guidance on adapters for Thunderbolt or USB-C ports on Mac. Do not assume two cables with USB-C-shaped connectors have the same capabilities.

Display outputs and compatibility
Match the dock’s available display connections to your monitors, but treat the MacBook’s host support as the deciding factor for how many displays can operate and at what modes. A dock with multiple video-capable connections cannot override a host limitation. CalDigit’s TS4 compatibility page gives an example of why both sides need checking: listed display support changes with the host configuration.
Example: what the CalDigit TS4 offers
The TS4 is one example of a Thunderbolt 4 dock, not an identified dock from any particular setup. CalDigit describes it as an 18-port dock and specifies up to 98W host power delivery. Its port list includes multiple USB-A and USB-C connections, Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort, card readers, Ethernet, and audio. Those features may suit a desk with varied peripherals, but they do not establish that it is the right choice for every MacBook or monitor arrangement.

CalDigit calls the TS4 “the most featured on any Thunderbolt dock ever.” That is the manufacturer’s own comparative claim, not independent testing. The US shop listing says a Thunderbolt 4 cable is included; check the listing for current availability and package details.

- You want to use the same desk displays and peripherals with a portable computer.
- Your MacBook supports the display count and modes you need.
- The dock has the right connections and sufficient host power delivery for your setup.
- You are comfortable relying on a single laptop for both mobile and desk use, rather than keeping a separate desktop computer.
A dock solves connection convenience. It does not establish that a MacBook matches a desktop’s performance, capacity, or suitability for a particular workload. Those depend on the exact computers and the work you do; the cited compatibility information does not provide a general performance comparison.
