Yes—if the apps, devices, and work routines you depend on are supported on macOS or in a browser. A MacBook Air is not a universal Windows replacement: Windows-only software, specialist hardware, games, and employer-managed tools can make switching difficult. Check those dependencies before buying, and treat Windows virtualization as a limited fallback rather than a guarantee that everything will work.
Start with the work you need the laptop to do
Make a list of the applications and features you rely on for school, work, finances, creative projects, accessibility, and hobbies. Check each exact application—not just its name—for a Mac version or a browser-based version, and confirm that the features you use are included. Apple’s regional guide for people switching from Windows to Mac notes that many familiar apps, including Microsoft Office, are available on Mac; that does not mean every Windows program or workflow is supported.

- For Microsoft 365 or Office, check your edition, employer or school account, add-ins, macros, and deployment requirements. Microsoft’s home-use Microsoft 365 requirements list support for Intel x86 and ARM-based Macs running one of the three most recent macOS versions. Work or school-managed setups and particular features may have different requirements.
- For specialist or Windows-only applications, ask the software maker whether the Mac version supports the specific functions, files, plug-ins, and workflows you need. A similarly named Mac app is not necessarily a drop-in replacement.
- For collaboration, confirm that colleagues or clients can open and edit the file formats you use, and that required sharing or review features work across platforms.
Check your devices, drivers, and games
List the hardware you connect to the laptop: printers, scanners, security keys, specialist input devices, audio interfaces, and any other essential peripherals. Ask each manufacturer about macOS support for the exact model and the functions you need; basic connectivity does not guarantee that all features or drivers are available.

If you plan to use Windows 11 Arm in a virtual machine, Microsoft says a peripheral needs built-in Windows support or an Arm64 driver from its manufacturer. Microsoft also warns that Windows on Arm has hardware, app, and game limitations, including with applications that rely on DirectX 12. Check support for each specific device and application rather than assuming a virtualized copy of Windows behaves like a Windows laptop.

Boot Camp is not the native dual-boot route on Apple silicon
Apple says Boot Camp installs Windows on Intel-based Macs. Apple identifies the M1 MacBook Air (2020) and MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later as Apple silicon Macs. Those Apple silicon Air models therefore do not use Boot Camp to natively dual-boot Windows. Check the architecture of any particular Mac before relying on an older setup guide.
Windows virtualization has compatibility and licensing conditions
Microsoft’s documentation authorizes Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 to run Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise Arm on Macs with M1, M2, and M3 chips. That wording does not establish authorization for other chip generations or later Parallels releases; check Microsoft’s current guidance before choosing a setup.
Virtualization may be useful when a required Windows app works on Windows Arm, but it is not a universal compatibility layer. Microsoft documents limitations involving hardware, apps, games, and some nested-virtualization features. Each Windows 11 Pro instance needs its own license unless you already have one. Confirm that your exact app and peripherals work in the intended virtual setup, and verify current licensing terms before relying on it.

Plan the move without confusing data transfer with app compatibility
Apple supports transferring data from a Windows PC with Migration Assistant, either during Mac setup or later. Its MacBook Air transfer instructions cover wired and wireless transfers and point to the Windows Migration Assistant version appropriate to the PC. Back up the PC separately before you begin, then check the transferred documents, photos, accounts, and application-specific data.
Migration Assistant moves data; it does not turn a Windows-only application into a Mac app or ensure that every setting and program will behave identically. Make a separate plan for software installation, account sign-ins, licenses, and any data stored inside individual applications.
Try the macOS routines you will use every day
Apple’s switcher guide maps common Windows habits to Mac equivalents: Finder is used to browse files, System Settings is where system preferences are managed, and a two-finger click on the trackpad or Control-click can open a contextual menu. The Command key replaces Windows Control for many common shortcuts. If those differences could interrupt school or work, try your regular tasks on a Mac before replacing your current laptop.
