Some Lenovo laptops can run on AC power with a removable battery taken out, but it is not guaranteed for every model. Lenovo’s no-power troubleshooting procedure uses this as a test for systems with removable batteries. The correct adapter, a working power source, and the laptop’s model-specific requirements still matter. For a laptop with an internal battery, consult its manual or Lenovo support rather than opening the computer based on general guidance.
When can a Lenovo laptop run without its battery?
A laptop may start from its AC adapter with its removable battery removed if that model supports AC operation in this configuration and the adapter and power connection are suitable. Lenovo Support’s general ThinkPad no-power procedure tells users to remove the battery if it is removable, then reconnect AC power to test for system power. Lenovo’s instructions also direct users to check the manual for the specific computer: Lenovo Support.

Removable battery
If the battery is designed to be removed by the user, Lenovo’s procedure supports testing the laptop on AC with the battery out. The ThinkPad L560 user guide gives a model-specific example: it instructs users to connect the AC adapter while keeping the battery out as part of troubleshooting. Internal battery
Lenovo’s general instruction is conditional on the battery being removable. It does not establish that users should open a laptop with an internal battery, or that every model will run if that battery is disconnected. Check the exact model’s user or service documentation, or contact Lenovo support, before considering any internal-battery work.
What to check before testing on AC power
- Identify the exact Lenovo model. Use its manual or Lenovo Support to confirm battery-removal guidance and AC-adapter requirements.
- Use an adapter specified for that model. Lenovo advises checking that the adapter is correct for the computer. There is no single wattage, connector, or adapter part number established here for all Lenovo laptops. Do not assume any Lenovo adapter or USB-C charger is compatible. See Lenovo Support for model-specific guidance.
- Check the power path. Confirm the adapter is connected properly and check the cable, outlet, and power source. Lenovo includes adapter and power-source checks in its troubleshooting guidance: Lenovo Support.
- If the battery is user-removable, follow the model’s instructions for the AC test. Do not remove an internal battery unless the model’s service documentation or Lenovo support directs you to do so.
- If the computer still will not power on, use Lenovo’s troubleshooting and support route. The AC test alone cannot determine whether the fault is the adapter, power connection, battery, or another component.
If it starts on AC but not on battery
Starting with the battery out shows that the laptop received enough power from AC to start under that test; it does not identify the battery as the only possible fault. Lenovo recommends checking battery health in Lenovo Vantage or Windows and seeking support if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. The L560 guide likewise directs users to seek support if that model starts on AC but does not start when AC is removed.

Use Lenovo’s battery troubleshooting guidance for the applicable checks: Lenovo Support. If you need a replacement adapter or battery, match it to the exact model; compatibility cannot be inferred from the Lenovo name alone.
