No—not as a standalone speaker. Amazon’s documentation describes a compatible Echo speaker playing audio from a compatible Fire TV device through Alexa Home Theater; it does not show the Fire TV Stick producing sound by itself or document a TV-free initial setup. If you already have a compatible Echo, you may be able to use it for Fire TV audio, but Amazon’s setup instructions direct you to finish configuration on the TV.
What the Fire TV Stick can—and cannot—do
A Fire TV Stick is a streaming device, not a documented standalone smart speaker. Amazon’s instructions for playing Fire TV audio on Echo devices describe the Echo as the audio output after you create an Alexa Home Theater group. They do not describe the Stick itself playing sound independently.

That distinction matters if your goal is to plug an old Stick into power and ask Alexa to play music without a TV. Amazon’s published setup guidance does not establish that use case, nor does it provide a TV-free first-time setup path. The documented arrangement is Fire TV audio routed to an Echo speaker.
How the supported Echo setup works
Amazon documents two ways to create an Alexa Home Theater group: through the Alexa app or from Fire TV settings. The exact options depend on the Fire TV and Echo models.

Fire TV menu route
On a compatible device, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Alexa Home Theater > Create Alexa Home Theater. Amazon’s setup instructions describe completing setup through the Fire TV interface; they do not establish that you can finish initial configuration without a connected TV.
Check your exact Fire TV and Echo models first
Alexa Home Theater compatibility varies by generation and device pairing. Amazon’s compatibility guide identifies some Fire TV devices that do not currently support Alexa Home Theater, including Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation), Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), and Fire TV Stick 4K Select. Other listed configurations support Fire TV audio only and require particular Echo generations.

Before buying an Echo for this purpose, look up both your Stick’s precise model and the Echo model in Amazon’s live compatibility list. The list is configuration-specific and can change; a general label such as “Fire TV Stick” is not enough to confirm support.

Amazon says you can hold the Alexa Voice button on a Fire TV remote and ask it to open an app, find a title, or play music. That is remote-based control of Fire TV, not evidence that an ordinary Stick becomes an always-listening speaker. Amazon also describes hands-free Alexa and a microphone switch on some other Fire TV devices, but those are device-specific features, not a general capability of every Stick. See Amazon’s Fire TV Alexa voice-control guidance for the details that apply to your device.

Choose based on the audio you want
- Want sound from Fire TV? A compatible Echo may play audio from a compatible Fire TV through Alexa Home Theater, once the group is set up.
- Want music from a speaker without Fire TV? The Stick is not documented as the speaker in this arrangement; the Echo is. Amazon’s cited instructions do not establish that the Stick can be set up as a TV-free, independent Alexa speaker.
- Do not have a TV available for setup? The published instructions reviewed here direct users to follow prompts on the TV, so they do not confirm a supported initial setup without one.
