What these tools do—and what they do not
GNU GRUB is a multiboot boot loader: it presents startup choices and loads an operating system. A graphical GRUB utility is a separate application for editing its configuration or repairing boot access; it is not the startup menu itself. The GNU GRUB Manual 2.14, dated January 8, 2026, documents the boot loader and its configuration.

The five tools below address different tasks. GRUB Customizer and Soplos GRUB Editor are Linux desktop editors, Grub2Win is designed to configure GRUB from Windows, and Boot-Repair and MX Boot Repair focus on recovery. A graphical interface does not remove the risk of a bad configuration: a GRUB menu can depend on distribution-specific scripts, firmware, and installation choices.

Distribution behavior matters. Fedora’s package description says the application aims to preserve dynamic GRUB configuration by changing script order and generating proxy scripts where needed. That is a description of its approach, not a guarantee for every distribution or system. Confirm that the version and package are intended for your distribution before applying changes.
Grub2Win: configure GRUB from Windows
Grub2Win’s project page describes it as a way to customize GNU GRUB from Windows. The project claims compatibility with Windows XP through Windows 11, EFI and BIOS firmware, and 32-bit and 64-bit systems. These are upstream claims; consult the project’s current compatibility instructions for your particular setup.

The project cautions that changing recommended advanced options can make a problem worse. Follow the project’s or your distribution’s repair guidance rather than experimenting with advanced settings, particularly if you cannot boot the installed system.
MX Boot Repair: repair utility for MX Linux
The MX Linux repository describes MX Boot Repair as a simple graphical application for reinstalling or repairing GRUB in MX Linux. Its stated scope is distribution-specific; do not assume it is a general-purpose GRUB settings editor or suitable for another distribution.
Check these points before changing GRUB
- Match the tool to the host environment. Grub2Win is intended for configuration from Windows; the editors listed here target Linux, while the repair utilities have their own recovery contexts.
- Verify distribution and GRUB layout. Package availability and behavior vary. A tool’s feature list does not prove compatibility with your exact distribution, firmware mode, encryption arrangement, or Secure Boot configuration.
- Understand what the application changes. Some operations edit menu settings or entries; others may affect generated scripts or run repair, generation, or reinstallation steps. Read the project and distribution instructions for the operation you plan to perform.
- Prefer documented recovery guidance. Boot-Repair specifically warns against changing advanced options without a reason. Use the relevant project or distribution instructions rather than treating a GUI as a safety net.
There is no common benchmark here for comparing ease, speed, or safety, so the useful distinction is the job each tool documents: editing, Windows-side configuration, or recovery.
