To make seawater drinkable, it must first be desalinated, then the resulting water may need stabilization or remineralization. These are separate jobs: a remineralization cartridge can adjust treated water, but it cannot remove the salt from seawater. Potability also depends on managing source-water hazards, treatment, and safe handling—not taste alone.
How do you make seawater drinkable?
Desalination removes dissolved salts from seawater. Reverse osmosis is one commonly used approach: pressure pushes water through a membrane that separates much of the salt and other constituents. Other technologies identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) include electrodialysis, multi-effect distillation, solar distillation, multi-stage flash, and nanofiltration. The WHO does not establish a universal ranking among these methods.

The right system depends on the feedwater and the setting. Relevant considerations include salinity, required output, energy supply and demand, pretreatment, maintenance, post-treatment, and monitoring. WHO’s 2025 small-island technology factsheet describes desalination in that context as high-cost and requiring extensive operation and maintenance; that is not a universal cost estimate for every plant or device. WHO has described seawater and brackish-water desalination as an increasingly viable way to produce safe drinking water as membrane technology advances. But desalination should be treated as a managed water-safety system, not a single filter step. WHO’s desalination guidance applies its Water Safety Plan framework across source water, treatment, and final-water handling. WHO: Safe drinking-water from desalination

Why isn’t salt removal enough to guarantee safety?
Desalination is a significant barrier to contaminants, but WHO cautions that it is not necessarily absolute. Seawater can present microbial and chemical hazards, including harmful algal events, certain free-living bacteria, boron, and bromide. Suitable intake location and design, treatment controls, and monitoring are part of managing these risks; salt removal alone does not establish that water is safe.
WHO’s broader drinking-water framework calls for locally adapted standards, preventive risk management through Water Safety Plans, and independent surveillance. Its 10 August 2026 Q&A explains that the guidelines help manage risks to drinking-water safety and help regulators develop national standards. WHO drinking-water guidelines Q&A

Why can desalinated water taste flat?
Water after desalination may contain few minerals and taste bland. That does not mean it is unsafe, and a pleasant taste does not prove safety. Taste is a reason to consider post-treatment, but another important reason is to stabilize the water before distribution.

WHO describes adding mineral constituents or blending desalinated water with mineral-rich water as ways to improve acceptability and stabilize it. Stabilization helps reduce the risk that treated water will be corrosive to plumbing and distribution materials. The appropriate treatment depends on the water and system; adding minerals to untreated seawater does not make it potable. Can a remineralization cartridge or pitcher filter treat seawater?
No. A remineralization cartridge is post-treatment for water that has already been desalinated; it does not remove seawater’s salt. A generic pitcher filter should not be assumed suitable for seawater. Boiling seawater does not remove salt either: without a way to collect and condense the evaporated water separately, boiling leaves the dissolved salts behind.
For a household system, verify that the specific device is designed for seawater feed—not merely ordinary tap water or brackish water—and check its stated pretreatment, maintenance, post-treatment, and water-quality verification requirements. Do not infer suitability from a “reverse osmosis” label alone.
