Can a Contabo VPS Transcode 1080p Video for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

A Contabo VPS’s vCPU count does not prove it can sustain 1080p transcoding. Understand shared versus dedicated CPU, YouTube’s ingest settings, bandwidth limits, and how to test the exact workload before relying on it 24/7.

Possibly—but a Contabo plan’s advertised vCPU count cannot tell you whether it will sustain real-time 1080p transcoding. The result depends on the source video, frame rate, encoder and settings, and the CPU resources actually available to your VPS. The sources available for this article do not include a controlled benchmark of 1080p transcoding on a named Contabo plan. Test the exact workload on the instance you plan to use before relying on it around the clock.

First distinguish transcoding—decoding and re-encoding video—from relaying or stream-copying already encoded video. The latter can avoid the video-encoding step when the source already matches the output requirements, so it is a different compute workload.

What determines whether the VPS can keep up?

For continuous transcoding, the server must encode frames at least as fast as the video is being played. If it falls behind, frames may be dropped or the stream may become unstable. A vCPU count alone does not establish that a particular source and encoder configuration will run in real time, especially on shared CPU resources.

Contabo’s product documentation distinguishes its ordinary Core and Performance VPS offerings, which use shared vCPUs, from Max Performance VPS (VDS), whose documentation describes dedicated CPU cores and reserved RAM. The Core VPS specifications reviewed list 4–18 vCPUs and 8–96 GB RAM; the Max Performance VPS CPUs shown are AMD EPYC 7282 at 2.8 GHz. These are published product specifications, not FFmpeg performance measurements, and product names or specifications can change. Check Contabo’s current product documentation and pricing for the region and plan you are considering.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

A dedicated-core VDS is therefore more relevant to evaluate for sustained CPU-heavy encoding than a shared-vCPU plan, but that distinction does not prove it can handle your particular stream. The sources reviewed establish no specific 1080p throughput or guarantee for either family.

Transcoding versus relaying an encoded video

Full transcoding

Transcoding decodes the input and encodes it again for YouTube. This uses CPU (or another available encoding resource) and makes the encoder configuration central to the performance test. A VPS that can send a stream over the network is not automatically capable of encoding that stream fast enough.

Relay or stream copy

If your prerecorded source is already encoded in a format and configuration suitable for the intended output, a relay or stream-copy workflow may avoid re-encoding the video. That can reduce the encoding workload, but suitability depends on the source and the intended output. The available sources do not benchmark relay or stream-copy performance on Contabo either.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings as the output target

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. These are YouTube stream settings; they do not specify the CPU capacity a VPS needs to encode a given video.

How to test a Contabo instance before depending on it

  1. Classify the workflow. Establish whether your source must be decoded and re-encoded or can be relayed/stream-copied without changing the video stream.
  2. Fix the workload before selecting a plan. Record the source resolution and frame rate, output codec, encoder and preset, and target YouTube bitrate. Use the intended values in the test; changing them later changes the workload.
  3. Test on the instance you intend to use. Run the exact workload continuously for a representative sustained interval. Confirm that encoding stays at or above real time, dropped frames do not accumulate, and CPU contention does not make the process unstable. A short start-up test is not evidence that a stream will remain stable 24/7.
  4. Send a representative test stream to YouTube. Use content similar to the planned stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages, as YouTube advises. Check both encoder behavior and outbound network stability.
  5. Compare CPU allocation fairly. If full re-encoding is CPU-heavy, test a shared-vCPU VPS and a dedicated-core VDS with the same source and settings. Do not choose solely by RAM or advertised core count; the sustained test result is what matters for your workload.
  6. Plan for recovery. For a business-critical stream, include process supervision, restart recovery, alerts, and a fallback source or stream plan. These are operational safeguards, not guarantees supplied by Contabo or YouTube.

Will bandwidth be enough?

The outbound YouTube feed is one ingest stream, so compare your target bitrate with the VPS’s measured, stable upload performance and leave operating margin. Contabo’s VPS documentation lists port rates by plan and says there is no default bandwidth cap, subject to its fair-use policy. Contabo also says exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled. A listed port speed or the absence of a default cap is not a guarantee of sustained throughput for an individual VPS.

Common test failures and what to check

  • Encoding falls behind or frames drop: Check whether the workload is full re-encoding, then verify the chosen encoder, preset, and source frame rate against CPU availability during sustained operation. Repeat the test with the exact intended settings; a plan’s vCPU count is not a substitute for this result.
  • The process is stable but YouTube reports stream-health problems: Check the outgoing codec, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and ingest connection against YouTube’s guidance. Confirm that the test content and configuration match the planned stream.
  • The stream starts but later becomes unstable: Review sustained CPU behavior and outbound network stability, not just the initial connection. Check whether CPU contention or network variation appears over time, then repeat a longer test.
  • YouTube receives a stream, but the VPS is doing unnecessary encoding work: Verify whether the source can be relayed or stream-copied while still matching the required output. Avoid assuming this is possible without checking the actual source and output requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from prerecorded videos and you do not need to transcode them on a VPS, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating your own server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded—up to 4K 60fps—at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not provide a camera-based live feed or a VPS transcoding benchmark. See StreamNeo or start the free trial.
