Yes. Dennis Hilk reports that he got DOOM running natively on a Cisco Unified IP Phone CP-9951—not just streamed to it from a computer. His project began with the Linux workstation doing the work, then progressed to a final build that ran on the phone’s ARM CPU and used its own display and keypad. In Hilk’s words, the final result was “Yes. Natively, locally, persistently and offline.” (Dennis Hilk’s project field note)
What the €35 project actually demonstrated
Hilk says he bought a used CP-9951 for €35 for the project. That is his reported purchase price, not a current price or an estimate of what a working handset typically costs.

The important distinction is where the game runs. A phone that displays video from a computer running DOOM is an interesting remote-play setup, but it is not a native port. Hilk describes both stages, and only the later one moved execution onto the phone.

Streamed DOOM came first
In the early setup, Hilk’s Linux workstation ran DOOM and sent video and audio to the phone. The account describes H.264/RTP streaming with an Asterisk and Baresip setup. The handset first served as a media endpoint and later relayed control input. The workstation—not the Cisco phone—was still running the game.

The final version ran on the phone
For the final v.666 build, Hilk reports that the game executed on the CP-9951’s ARM CPU. It rendered through /dev/fb1 and read physical keypad input from /dev/input/keypad0. The project account also reports local sound and installation in the phone’s flash storage, with the game available from a menu.
Hilk says he demonstrated that build launching after a cold boot with Ethernet disconnected. That is the author’s report about his tested handset and build, not an independently verified compatibility result for every CP-9951.

Streamed versus native: the practical difference
| Aspect | Streamed stage | Final native build |
|---|---|---|
| Where DOOM executes | Linux workstation, according to Hilk’s account | CP-9951 ARM CPU, according to Hilk’s account |
| Network role | Carries the streamed media between workstation and phone | Hilk reports launching after cold boot with Ethernet disconnected |
| Input | Phone used as a remote controller in the later streamed setup | Physical keypad read at /dev/input/keypad0 |
| Display and audio | Phone receives streamed video and audio | Framebuffer at /dev/fb1 and local sound, as reported by Hilk |
| Persistence | Workstation runs the game | Hilk reports installation in the phone’s flash storage and a menu launch |
What hardware and software did he use?
The project account identifies the tested environment as MontaVista Linux on ARMv6 and gives the firmware context as sip9951.9-2-1. Hilk also reports roughly 244 MB of RAM from the tested phone’s shell environment; this is an observation about his unit, not a general specification for all CP-9951 handsets.
The released package uses Freedoom Phase 2, according to the author, and does not bundle a commercial DOOM IWAD. The distinction matters: the port and its game data are separate from proprietary DOOM assets. The account does not establish that commercial game files are included or licensed as part of the release.

It is a maker project demonstrating a native game port on one reported handset and firmware context. It does not establish that every CP-9951 revision or firmware version will run the build, nor does it provide a general compatibility guarantee. The detailed technical description and offline-boot claim come from Hilk’s account; a technical-news report also summarizes the native port and its ARMv6/MontaVista context.
