No—not as a direct replacement. A CD4050B and CD4049UB are logic buffers, while the NE555 is designed for timing. You can build a custom delay around a buffer and an RC network, but the cited buffer specifications do not promise a 555-equivalent delay, switching thresholds, or timing accuracy.
What each IC is designed to do
Texas Instruments describes the NE555 as a precision timing circuit. In monostable mode, its timed interval is controlled by an external resistor-capacitor (RC) network. The CD4050B and CD4049UB, by contrast, are logic buffers: the CD4050B is noninverting, and the CD4049UB is inverting. Their cited datasheet covers buffering and logic-level conversion, not a 555-style one-shot timer.

For the NE555, TI states: “Each timer has a trigger level equal to approximately one-third of the supply voltage and a threshold level equal to approximately two-thirds of the supply voltage.” A low trigger sets the internal flip-flop and makes the output high; a high threshold resets it and makes the output low. Those approximate ratios are documented for the 555, not for the CD4050B or CD4049UB.

An RC voltage changes over time, so it may be possible to use a buffer’s logic transition as part of a custom delay circuit. But the cited buffer specifications do not establish a timer threshold, hysteresis, or timing accuracy for that arrangement. Without those defined characteristics, the delay cannot be assumed to be predictable or repeatable, or equivalent to a 555 monostable interval.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: NE555
- Voltage: 4.5V-18V
- Current: 10~15 mA
- Output current (maximum): 225 mA
- Rise/fall time: 100 ns
That distinction matters especially when a capacitor produces a slow-changing input. The circuit’s switching point and response to that transition affect when the output changes. A buffer datasheet that does not specify timer-like behavior does not, by itself, provide enough information to calculate or guarantee the interval.
On-delay and off-delay describe different sequences
Before choosing a circuit, define what the output must do at power-up, while the delay runs, and after the delay ends. “On-delay” and “off-delay” can refer to different switching sequences; a single monostable arrangement may not provide both. The required output polarity also matters: the CD4050B preserves logic polarity, while the CD4049UB inverts it. Swapping one for the other does not make either a drop-in timer.

Compare the requirements before choosing a circuit
| Requirement | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Delay and tolerance | How long the delay must be and how much variation is acceptable. |
| Supply voltage | Whether the circuit’s supply and input conditions suit the exact part. The cited CD4050B/CD4049UB family datasheet documents operation from 3 V to 18 V; check the exact device and recommended conditions. |
| Input transition | How the circuit behaves as the RC voltage changes, including slow transitions and the relevant switching thresholds. |
| Polarity and sequence | The output state at power-up, during the delay, and afterward, including whether inversion is needed. |
| Load | The required output current and load conditions against the device’s specifications. |
| Startup and reset | Whether the circuit reaches a safe, defined output state when power is applied or interrupted. |
| Validation | Whether the complete design has been checked across its intended supply, component, load, and operating conditions. |
These checks matter for either approach. TI’s datasheet also cautions that application implementations require customer validation; a proposed buffer-RC circuit should be analyzed against the exact part’s limits and tested under the conditions where it will operate.

Practical choice
- Choose a 555-based timing circuit when you need the timer architecture documented for a monostable interval and can define the required delay and output sequence.
- Consider a buffer with an RC network only as a custom design when you can establish its switching behavior from the exact device specifications, analyze the circuit, and validate it for the intended conditions.
No delay target, supply, load, or tolerance is specified here, so there is no justified component-value recommendation or verified circuit to provide. For the buffer family’s operating and application limits, see TI’s CD4049UB/CD4050B datasheet; for the 555’s timing description and trigger and threshold behavior, see TI’s NE555 product documentation.
