Can a Browser Extension Steal Crypto From a Wallet?

A malicious extension can be one route to crypto wallet compromise, but phishing, malware, exposed recovery phrases and unsafe approvals can also cause losses.

Yes. A fake or malicious browser extension can contribute to crypto wallet theft, but an unexplained transfer does not by itself prove an extension was responsible. Wallet compromise can also involve phishing, malware, an exposed Secret Recovery Phrase or private key, or a risky smart-contract approval.

How an extension can put a wallet at risk

A wallet extension is not automatically able to take every asset simply because it is installed. Its effective access depends on the browser permissions it receives and the sites it can interact with. A malicious extension may be dangerous if it can interact with relevant pages, collect data, alter web interactions, or obtain wallet secrets through deceptive prompts or another compromise.

MetaMask lists a fake MetaMask extension among possible causes of a compromised wallet, alongside malware, phishing, disclosure of wallet credentials, and granting a decentralized application or site’s smart contract unlimited access to funds. The available official guidance establishes these as possible routes, but not one universal technical mechanism or a rate showing how often extensions cause theft.

Permissions and site access matter

Chrome advises extension developers to request only the APIs and websites an extension needs. Broad host permissions such as *://*/*, https://*/*, or <all_urls> can expose an extension to a wide range of web activity, particularly when combined with other permissions. Chrome describes possible abuses including browsing-history collection, search hijacking, scraping banking sites, and credential harvesting.

These examples explain why broad access deserves scrutiny; they do not mean every extension with broad permissions can automatically extract a wallet’s recovery phrase or transfer funds. The risk depends on the permissions, browser behavior, and the attacker’s method.

Updates can change the risk

An extension that appears legitimate can also become a supply-chain risk if its developer account is compromised. Chrome warns that an attacker who takes over a developer account could push malicious code to users of that extension. This is a possible distribution route, not evidence that any particular wallet extension has been compromised.

Why a recovery phrase matters

A Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) is the master key to the wallet: someone who controls it can control the accounts derived from it. Wallets may use 12, 18, or 24 words, so do not assume every wallet uses the same phrase length. Never enter or share the phrase or a private key in response to an unsolicited support request, popup, or website.

If a phrase or private key has been exposed, changing an extension alone does not make the associated wallet safe. MetaMask advises stopping use of the old wallet and any accounts tied to the compromised phrase.

How to screen a wallet extension

These checks help reduce exposure; they are not an independent security audit or a guarantee that an extension is safe.

  1. Start at the wallet provider’s verified official website and follow its link to the official store listing. Check the extension name and publisher identity carefully to avoid an impersonator.
  2. Review the requested permissions and host access. Ask whether each permission makes sense for the extension’s stated purpose, and scrutinize broad access to websites.
  3. Keep only the extensions you need. Remove extensions you no longer use to reduce the privileges available if one is compromised.
  4. Consider store review as one layer, not a safety guarantee. Google says submissions are reviewed and published extensions are periodically reviewed; the process evolves, and dangerous permission requests or significant code changes may receive closer examination.
  5. Before confirming a wallet transaction or approval, check what it authorizes. An unlimited smart-contract allowance can create risk independently of the browser extension.

What to do if you see an unauthorized transfer

First check the transaction date and time, recipient, dapp, and amount before deciding it was unauthorized. An unfamiliar transaction may have another explanation, and identifying its details helps you assess what happened.

If you believe a self-custodial MetaMask wallet is compromised, MetaMask’s guidance is to use a clean environment and act promptly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a new wallet from another browser, browser profile, or device. Do not reconnect an identity account that may itself be compromised.
  2. Keep the new wallet’s recovery phrase private. Do not enter it into a suspicious extension or website.
  3. If funds remain and it is safe to do so, transfer them to the new wallet.
  4. Stop using the old wallet and any accounts associated with the exposed phrase, and report the scam.

These are MetaMask’s instructions for its self-custodial wallet, not a promise that funds can be rescued. MetaMask says it cannot reverse transactions or restore missing funds; crypto transfers may be irreversible.
