For T-Mobile customers in the United States, the service is called T-Satellite: the phone connects automatically when regular coverage is unavailable, but the exact phone, features, coverage and price depend on the carrier’s current terms.
How SpaceX Direct to Cell connects a phone
Direct to Cell is a carrier-partnered cellular service, not a phone connecting to a household Starlink dish. SpaceX says its Direct to Cell satellites carry equipment that communicates directly with 4G LTE phones and function “essentially as cell towers in space.” A compatible phone can therefore connect to an overhead satellite when a terrestrial cell site is out of reach. SpaceX’s Direct to Cell overview describes the system; the FCC’s December 2024 order sets out the regulatory context for supplemental coverage from space.

In the United States, T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service uses its partnership with Starlink and carrier network arrangements. The phone switches automatically when terrestrial service is unavailable; T-Mobile says users may see “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink” as the network name. The satellite moves overhead, so the connection can hand off between satellites. A message may take longer to send, and the phone can retry in the background. T-Mobile’s current T-Satellite page describes the service and its terms.

A compatible phone on a participating carrier
T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work with T-Satellite, but that is a broad statement, not a guarantee for every model, configuration or feature. Check the exact device against T-Mobile’s eligible-device list before relying on it. Do not assume that any LTE or 5G phone will work, or that a compatible device on another carrier has access to T-Satellite.

No dish or manual satellite setup
T-Mobile describes T-Satellite as connecting automatically without changing settings. Its service description does not require a customer Starlink terminal, separate antenna, special case or manual satellite selection for ordinary phone connectivity. A participating carrier and an eligible phone are the practical prerequisites; service availability still depends on where you are and whether a satellite connection is available.
What T-Satellite can do—and what it cannot promise
T-Mobile currently lists SMS, MMS and RCS messaging, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps, and WhatsApp calling over satellite. App support is specific to the operator and can change, so consult T-Mobile’s live app and feature information rather than assuming a particular app or function will work.
Optimized apps are designed for the lower bandwidth and limited capacity of a satellite connection. This is a way to extend a carrier’s reach, not a promise of continuous, full-speed broadband. Satellite availability, handoffs and message delays can affect use; the official service information reviewed does not establish a current measured speed or message-delivery success rate.

Do not treat satellite messaging as a guaranteed substitute for calling emergency services. T-Mobile warns that availability and location accuracy can be limited, and some emergency texts may reach a national response center rather than being routed directly to the local response center. Follow the instructions shown by your carrier and use another available emergency contact method if you need a faster or more reliable response.
Where T-Satellite is listed and what it costs
T-Mobile’s current service page lists coverage across the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, parts of southern Alaska, Canada, New Zealand and Japan. This is the listed footprint for T-Mobile’s T-Satellite offering, not a claim that Starlink Direct to Cell is available worldwide. Check the current coverage map and terms before travel or depending on coverage in a specific place.
T-Mobile currently lists T-Satellite as included in its Experience Beyond and Better Value plans. It also lists a limited-time option for other customers and non-customers at $10 per month per line. These are changeable plan terms, not a permanent price; confirm eligibility and the current charge on T-Mobile’s page before signing up.

How the service has changed since launch
In February 2025, SpaceX announced that commercial messaging had gone live in the United States and New Zealand for T-Mobile and OneNZ customers. At that time, SpaceX said more than 400 Direct to Cell satellites had been launched and described messaging for 4G LTE phones. Its announcement discussed IoT, data and voice as capabilities it would work toward; that dated roadmap is not evidence that every capability was available then. T-Mobile’s February 9, 2025 beta announcement described a text-only experience at that stage, with picture messages, data and voice framed as future capabilities. That historical beta description should not be confused with T-Mobile’s current feature list. T-Mobile’s beta announcement records the earlier stage of the service.
SpaceX’s October 8, 2026 update describes a planned Starlink Mobile architecture combining satellite and terrestrial deployment, and says final FCC approval is still to come. It is a forward-looking company plan, not a description of current T-Satellite features. See SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile update.
Quick Recap
What to check before relying on satellite coverage
- Confirm your exact phone model and configuration on the participating carrier’s current eligibility list.
- Verify the carrier, plan eligibility, price and coverage where you expect to use the service.
- Check the carrier’s current supported features and app list; satellite support differs by operator and can change.
- Allow for delayed messages, limited capacity and satellite handoffs, and keep another emergency contact option in mind.
