Yes. Blu-ray players generally play standard DVD-Video discs and music CDs. Burned discs, computer-created file discs, region-coded DVDs and unusual formats are less predictable, so check the manual for your exact player and the format of your disc.
Which discs can a Blu-ray player play?
Sony’s general compatibility guidance lists DVD movies and music CDs as playable in Blu-ray Disc players. It treats recordable DVD and CD media separately, which is important: support for ordinary DVDs and CDs does not guarantee that every burned disc or recording method will work. Sony’s media guidance (March 21, 2023) is a category-level overview, not a substitute for the specifications of a particular model.

| Disc or content | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Commercial DVD-Video | Generally supported. The DVD’s region must also be compatible with the player; check both before troubleshooting playback. |
| Music CD (CD-DA) | Generally supported, but nonstandard or protected discs may be exceptions. |
| DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-R/RW | Support depends on the player, the content, the recording method and, for some discs, finalization. Consult the model manual. |
| Movie file copied onto a data disc | Copying a file alone may not create a playable DVD. The disc needs suitable authoring and a format supported by the player. |
| DualDisc | The two sides may behave differently; playback of both is not guaranteed. |
| HD DVD and other uncommon formats | Do not assume support just because the player reads Blu-ray discs. Check the manual’s supported-format list. |
Will a Blu-ray player play burned DVDs and CDs?
Sometimes. A player may support particular recordable media, such as DVD-R or CD-R, but that does not mean it supports every disc created with that media. The disc’s file or video format, recording method and the player’s model-specific compatibility all matter. Sony’s support information lists recordable media types separately from DVD movies and music CDs.

Why won’t my DVD-R play?
Check these possibilities in order:
- The disc was not finalized. Finalization closes a recording session so compatible players can read the disc. Panasonic’s DMP-BD81 instructions require finalization for recorded DVD-R/RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL and CD-R/RW discs on that specific unit. Requirements vary by model.
- The disc’s format or recording method is unsupported. A video disc authored for a different playback format, or a data disc containing a file type the player does not recognize, may not work even if the disc itself is readable.
- The DVD’s region is incompatible. Region compatibility depends on the player and disc. Check the region information in the exact model’s manual and on the disc packaging.
- The disc is unusual or damaged. A DualDisc, for example, can have different compatibility on its two sides. Physical condition can also affect reading, but cleaning cannot make an unsupported format or region compatible.
Does copying a movie file to a disc make a DVD?
No. A file copied from a computer onto a disc is not necessarily authored as a DVD-Video disc. Sony’s support article explains that simply copying a movie file to a disc is insufficient for playback and that disc-creation software must create an appropriate format. The player must also support the resulting disc and file format.

What about CDs, DualDiscs and other optical formats?
Music CDs
Standard music CDs are generally supported, but do not assume every disc labeled as a CD conforms to the same specifications. For example, Sony warns that the CD side of some DualDiscs may not play because it does not meet Compact Disc Digital Audio specifications.
DualDiscs
A DualDisc has a DVD side and an audio side, and support for one side does not establish support for the other. Sony says the DVD side is playable on the UBP-X700, but playback of the CD side is not guaranteed. That statement is specific to Sony’s UBP-X700 documentation, last modified November 1, 2024; it should not be generalized to every player.

HD DVD, DVD-Audio, Video CD and SACD
Blu-ray playback does not imply support for other optical-disc formats. Panasonic’s DMP-BD81 manual lists HD DVD, DVD-Audio, Video CD and Super Audio CD among formats that unit does not support. These are examples from one model’s manual, not a universal exclusion list for all Blu-ray players.
How to check compatibility before buying or troubleshooting
- Find the exact player model. Use the model number printed on the unit or its label, not just the brand or the phrase “Blu-ray player.”
- Open that model’s manual or specifications. Look for supported disc types, video/audio and file formats, recording-media notes, and any finalization requirements.
- Identify the disc precisely. Check whether it is DVD-Video, a recordable DVD or CD, a data disc, a DualDisc, or another format. For burned media, note the disc type and how it was recorded.
- Check regional compatibility. Compare the DVD’s region with the player’s region information for the market where it was sold.
- For a burned disc, confirm finalization and authoring. If it contains a movie file, verify that it was created in a format the player supports rather than merely copied as a file.
When comparing players, focus on those same compatibility details and the tray or loading design if you have unusual discs. HDMI and picture-quality features affect how a player connects or displays video; they do not determine whether its drive can read a particular disc format.
