Can a Bird Strike Take Down a Fighter Jet?

A bird strike can bring down a fighter jet, but documented accidents show possibility, not probability. See what happened in F-15E and F-16 incidents.

Yes. A bird strike can bring down a fighter jet, particularly when birds are ingested into an engine. A 2004 U.S. Air Force F-15E investigation documented an engine failure, fire, loss of control and the destruction of the aircraft after a vulture strike. Other reported fighter incidents had different outcomes, so these cases show that a loss is possible—not how likely one is.

How a bird strike can lead to a fighter jet loss

A bird can hit an aircraft without entering an engine. When birds are ingested, however, they can damage or disrupt a turbine engine. The results in the documented fighter cases range from degraded engine performance to catastrophic failure.

In the F-15E accident, the Air Combat Command investigation reported catastrophic failure of the right engine and a fire. Damage to multiple control and mechanical systems left the aircraft uncontrollable. The public summary does not itemize every damaged component, so it does not support a more specific account of the mechanical sequence.

A strike is not the only factor that determines what happens next. In a separate F-16 investigation, the Air Force cited the pilot’s immediate low-altitude turn after the strike as a contributing decision: it reduced the aircraft’s altitude and airspeed. That finding illustrates how an aircraft’s situation after impact can matter; it is not a universal recovery rule or cockpit procedure.

What documented fighter incidents show

Aircraft and incident Reported strike and outcome Crew outcome
F-15E, Callaway, Virginia, May 6, 2004. Air Combat Command investigation, released August 2, 2004. A large black vulture was ingested into the right engine. The investigation reported catastrophic engine failure, fire and damage to multiple control and mechanical systems. The aircraft became uncontrollable, crashed and was destroyed. Investigators also cited a flight leader’s decision to direct the aircraft to join formation at low level rather than climb to avoid a known bird-strike hazard area. The pilot and weapons systems officer ejected safely.
F-16, Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. U.S. Air Force investigation, 2013. Several birds were ingested after takeoff during a touch-and-go training exercise, degrading engine performance. The investigation identified the pilot’s immediate low-altitude turn, which reduced altitude and airspeed, as a contributing decision. Not stated in the cited account.
F-16 crash attributed to a bird strike. U.S. Air Force account, 2003. The Air Force attributed the crash to at least one spot-billed duck ingested into the engine, resulting in catastrophic engine failure. Not stated in the cited account.

These reports are individual cases, not a representative sample. They cannot establish the probability of losing an aircraft after a strike or show that one fighter model is more vulnerable than another.

How common is the danger?

The Federal Aviation Administration’s wildlife-strike FAQ, current in 2026, reports that wildlife strikes globally killed more than 655 people and destroyed over 350 civil and military aircraft between 1990 and 2025. Those figures cover civil and military aircraft collectively; they are not a fighter-jet count and cannot be used to calculate a fighter’s strike or loss rate.

The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Manual identifies engine-ingestion and windshield strikes as the most serious wildlife strikes in its general pilot guidance and urges reporting. This is context about aviation wildlife hazards, not a fighter-specific risk estimate.

Do engine standards make fighters immune?

No. The FAA’s historical account of the DC-10 describes the development and revision of turbine-engine foreign-object-ingestion requirements, including bird requirements in 14 CFR 33.77. Such certification requirements are risk controls; their existence does not guarantee that an engine—or an aircraft—will remain safely flyable after a bird strike. The cited history concerns engine standards generally and does not establish a fighter-specific survival guarantee.
