How to Check and Update Your BIOS Version in Windows 11: Dell, HP, Lenovo, and ASUS

To check your BIOS version in Windows 11, press Windows + R, enter msinfo32, and press Enter. In System Information, read BIOS Version/Date. To update it, use the instructions and firmware package on the manufacturer’s support page for your PC’s exact model—not a BIOS file chosen only because its version number is newer.

Check your BIOS version and PC model in Windows 11

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter. You can also search for System Information or msinfo32 from Start.
  3. In the System Information window, find BIOS Version/Date and note the value.
  4. Note the entries for System Manufacturer and System Model. You need the exact model to find its firmware and instructions.

Microsoft describes MSINFO32 as a Windows tool for viewing information about hardware, system components, and the software environment. Some details may be limited in Safe Mode, and administrator access may be needed to refresh certain driver information; these limitations do not change the basic BIOS-version lookup. Dell also documents finding the BIOS Version/Date field in System Information.

Decide whether an update is appropriate

Open the official support page for the computer’s exact model and compare its offered BIOS package with the installed version. Read the release notes and prerequisites before deciding. A higher version number by itself does not show that an update is necessary: consider whether the listed fixes, compatibility changes, or manufacturer guidance apply to your PC.

Update methods and packages are model-specific. Follow the support page and, where provided, the package’s Read Me. Do not install a file for a similar model or select firmware based only on the manufacturer’s name.

Choose the update route listed for your manufacturer and model

Manufacturer Possible documented routes What to follow
Dell SupportAssist, an optional firmware update through Windows Update when offered, Dell Command | Update on supported business systems, a standalone update utility, or USB and other model-dependent methods. Use the package for the exact system. Dell identifies USB as an option for Linux systems or when Windows is not accessible. Not every route applies to every Dell PC.
HP HP Support Assistant; applicable Windows or Device Manager firmware update procedures. Start with the HP support information for the exact computer. HP’s consumer notebook directions and available methods do not necessarily apply to every model.
Lenovo A Windows BIOS package, when the Windows method applies. Download the package for the exact system, read its included Read Me, and follow those directions. Fixes, functions, and steps are model-specific.
ASUS MyASUS System Update when supported, a BIOS installer from the exact model’s support page, or a firmware/UEFI tool such as EZ Flash if the Windows installer is unavailable. ASUS says screens and supported methods vary by model. For EZ Flash, use the extracted BIOS file for that model and follow ASUS’s removable-media instructions.

These are examples of manufacturer-documented routes, not interchangeable choices. For instance, a utility may be available only on supported systems, while a firmware tool may be appropriate only when the model’s instructions call for it. The exact model’s current support page and package directions should determine what you use.

Prepare before installing BIOS firmware

  • Verify the model and package: Confirm the product or system model on the manufacturer’s page, then read the release notes and prerequisites. Dell and ASUS explicitly direct users to match the firmware to the system; Lenovo’s package Read Me provides model-specific guidance.
  • Secure stable power: Connect the PC to AC power. Do not force it to shut down or interrupt the firmware process. ASUS Support says, “Ensure that the device is connected to power and do not force shutdown during the BIOS update to prevent any abnormal issues.”
  • Have encryption recovery information ready: A firmware change can lead to a BitLocker recovery prompt. Locate and make sure you can access your recovery key, and follow the manufacturer’s advice about encryption protection before changing firmware. Dell and ASUS discuss this risk, and Microsoft’s BitLocker guidance describes recovery as a possible troubleshooting situation.
  • Leave unrelated firmware settings alone: Change only what the manufacturer’s update procedure requires. Microsoft cautions that changing other UEFI/BIOS settings can prevent Windows from starting. The interface and available settings differ by manufacturer.

Follow the package instructions and let the update finish

Once you have confirmed the exact package, use the installation route specified for your model—such as the manufacturer’s Windows utility, an applicable firmware update offered through Windows Update, a Windows installer, or a removable-media method. Do not assume a method listed for one PC is supported on another. During installation, keep power connected and do not force a shutdown.

  • 5.5.Tips: Some chips are affected by peripheral circuits and cannot be clipped directly. Please check the chip location on the motherboard before purchasing!

If Windows is unavailable, use an alternate route only if the manufacturer documents it for your model. For example, Dell lists USB for defined circumstances, and ASUS documents EZ Flash as a model-dependent option. A USB flash drive is not necessary for every BIOS update; use removable media only when your PC’s instructions require or support it.

After the update

Let the PC complete its restart or any on-screen firmware steps. If Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key, use the key you prepared. If the update does not appear to match the support page or an unexpected prompt occurs, stop rather than trying a firmware package for another model; consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact PC.
