Yes, a $99 GPS watch can cover the basics of marathon training—but the available evidence does not show that it handles those tasks better than Garmin. The Amazfit Active 2 is a concrete US$99 example, with GPS and workout features reported in TechRadar’s 2026 guide. But the cited review does not give its battery life while recording GPS or compare it with a Garmin through a marathon training cycle. The useful question is whether a specific watch meets your needs for long-run recording, workouts, and training feedback—not whether a lower price beats a brand.
What a $99 watch can do for marathon training
For most runners, the essential watch jobs are recording a route, showing pace and distance, and supporting the workouts in the training plan. The Amazfit Active 2 is a real budget option: TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists it at $99 in the US and reports GPS and workout features, along with reviewer testing of GPS and heart rate. That makes it a plausible candidate for basic training, not proof that it is equivalent to a particular Garmin model.

TechRadar reported that the Active 2’s heart-rate reading was one beat per minute off in its tested comparison, and that its GPS accuracy was comparable to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the publication’s review. Those are reviewer findings from that test, not guarantees for every runner, route, or training block. The source does not establish Active 2 GPS-mode battery runtime or a direct marathon comparison against Garmin. TechRadar’s 2026 budget running-watch guide

Garmin’s Forerunner 165 provides a useful model-specific comparison because its official product page spells out both training features and GPS-mode battery estimates. It lists built-in GPS, pace and distance, daily suggested workouts that adapt to performance and recovery, training effect, recovery time, and a marathon race predictor. Garmin Coach plans on that page cover 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances; that is not the same as a Garmin-provided marathon training plan.

| Price in the cited source | $99 in the US, as listed by TechRadar’s 2026 guide; price and availability can change. | Not stated on Garmin’s cited product page. |
| Battery figures | Up to 10 days reported by TechRadar; the cited passage does not identify this as GPS-mode runtime. | Up to 11 days in smartwatch mode; up to 19 hours in GPS-only GNSS mode; up to 17 hours in all-systems GNSS mode, according to Garmin Singapore. |
| Running and training features established by the cited source | GPS and workout features, as reported by TechRadar. | Built-in GPS, pace, distance, daily suggested workouts, training effect, recovery time, and marathon race predictor, according to Garmin. |
| Evidence about GPS accuracy | TechRadar reviewer reported GPS accuracy comparable to Apple Watch Ultra 2 in its test; no Garmin marathon comparison is given. | Garmin lists GPS features, but the product page does not establish a head-to-head accuracy result against the Active 2. |
Garmin’s battery figures illustrate why “up to 10 days” is not enough to judge long-run suitability: smartwatch time and continuous satellite recording are different measures. For the Active 2, the cited review does not provide the GPS-mode number needed for a direct endurance comparison. Check the exact model’s GPS recording estimate and allow a margin for your longest runs and race day. Garmin Forerunner 165 specifications
Does Garmin have better GPS accuracy?
Neither price nor brand alone proves which watch will record your routes more accurately. GPS measurements can vary with satellite positions, surroundings, and device design. A 2022 study by Joe Dumas examined three Garmin generations with one runner repeating one route; within that narrow test, the Forerunner 45S was less accurate in distance trueness and precision than the two older Garmin models. It did not test Amazfit, and it cannot establish a brand-wide ranking or settle an Active 2-versus-Forerunner 165 comparison.

TechRadar’s Active 2 result is encouraging for that review’s test conditions, but it is not evidence that the watch will match Garmin on your routes across a full marathon plan. If distance consistency matters, compare how the exact models perform on the routes you actually run and consider whether you need more than wrist-based pace and distance. - Check GPS-mode battery life. Find the manufacturer’s estimate for continuous GPS recording, not just smartwatch-mode or general battery life. Compare it with the time you expect to spend on your longest run and race day.
- Match workout support to your plan. Confirm that the watch can create or follow the intervals, pace targets, or other structured sessions you use. “Workout features” alone does not specify which workout types are supported.
- Decide how much training feedback you need. If daily adaptive workouts, recovery time, training effect, or a marathon race predictor matter to you, verify that the exact model includes them. Garmin lists those features for the Forerunner 165; the cited Active 2 review does not establish an equivalent feature set.
- Consider your routes and heart-rate needs. Trees, buildings, and other environmental conditions can affect GPS measurements. If you train by heart rate, treat a single reviewer’s result as one data point, and verify compatibility before choosing an external sensor.
- Compare current prices only after the fit check. TechRadar listed the Active 2 at $99 in the US in its 2026 guide. That price is time- and market-specific, not a promise of current availability.
Does either watch make marathon training more successful?
The cited product specifications and limited device testing do not show that choosing one watch causes better marathon performance. A watch can make training data easier to collect and interpret; it does not replace a suitable plan, consistent training, or sound pacing. Choose the lower-cost option if its GPS recording endurance, workout support, and feedback fit your use. Pay more only for specific capabilities you will actually use—not on the assumption that Garmin’s name or a higher price guarantees better results.
