Thermalright TR-KG750 Review: Is This 750W PSU Worth Its Price?

The Thermalright TR-KG750 offers a current ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 feature set, full modularity and a native 12V-2×6 cable. Tom’s Hardware’s testing found it met the cited 80 PLUS Gold thresholds at 115 VAC—but with little headroom—and became loud near full load. A roughly 45°C stress test also showed weaker efficiency and higher noise, though that temperature exceeds the unit’s stated 40°C operating limit. The review’s $91 US price was recorded on 11 September 2026; it is not a verified current price.

What is the Thermalright TR-KG750?

The TR-KG750 is a 750W, fully modular power supply. Thermalright’s product page identifies the model as KG-750 and lists 80 PLUS Gold efficiency, 100–240Vac input, a 120 mm fan, a 0–40°C operating range and a five-year warranty. It also lists over-power, over-voltage, over-temperature, over-current, short-circuit and under-voltage protection. Thermalright’s KG-750 specifications describe the manufacturer’s stated features, rather than independent test results.

Tom’s Hardware describes the reviewed unit as ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compatible, with a native 12V-2×6 cable and a 140 mm-deep body. Its connector set comprises one 24-pin ATX cable, two EPS 4+4-pin cables, one 12V-2×6 cable, two PCIe 8-pin connectors, six SATA connectors and three Molex connectors. Check your case clearance and GPU power connection before buying; the included native cable is the relevant connection for compatible graphics cards. Tom’s Hardware’s review and test results cover the specific 750W unit.

Who makes the tested unit?

Thermalright sells the power supply under its own model name, but the platform attribution comes from the reviewer’s inspection, not an official Thermalright declaration. Tom’s Hardware reports that the label names Somore Tech Co., Ltd. as manufacturer of record and credits production to Jiushouyangguang Power Supply (Shenzhen). The reviewer found HKCMAX-750 on the internal model marking and interpreted the platform as HKC-built; the main board was marked ATX32 Main BD Rev1.2, with a silkscreen date of April 2023. These are teardown observations about the reviewed sample, not evidence of production consistency across every unit.

How efficient is it, and how loud does it get?

Tom’s Hardware tested the unit at 25°C. At 115 VAC, it measured 87.2% efficiency at 20% load, 90.3% at 50% load and 87.9% at full load. The review cites 80 PLUS Gold thresholds of 87%, 90% and 87% at those points, so the measured results were above the thresholds by just 0.2, 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points. Across the nominal load range, the review reports average efficiency of 88.5% at 115 VAC and 89.5% at 230 VAC. At sustained 750W, it measured 87.9% at 115 VAC and 89.2% at 230 VAC.

Noise is the more obvious compromise for a system that often draws high power. The fan runs continuously, and the review measured nearly 51 dB(A) at 750W during its 25°C testing. It also reported heatsink temperatures around 60°C in that run. These are the reviewer’s measurements under its test conditions, not a promise of the noise or temperature in every PC case.

  • Modern Standby Compatible: Extremely fast wake-from-sleep times and better low-load efficiency.

What changed in the roughly 45°C stress test?

Tom’s Hardware also tested the PSU at approximately 45°C ambient—five degrees above Thermalright’s stated 40°C operating limit. This is an out-of-rating stress test, not a normal-use result within the manufacturer’s specified range. At 115 VAC, average efficiency fell to 86.6%, and full-load efficiency was 84.5%; at 230 VAC, the corresponding figures were 87.6% average and 85.8% at full load. At sustained 750W, measured noise reached 58 dB(A), and the primary heatsink exceeded 100°C. The unit completed the load steps without shutting down.

The hot test is useful as a warning about performance under unusually high ambient heat, but it should not be read as evidence that the PSU is rated for continuous operation at 45°C. For a build expected to run in a warm room or with restricted airflow, the stated operating range and the test’s noise and efficiency results deserve more weight than the Gold badge alone.

What did the review find about voltage, ripple and protection?

In Tom’s Hardware’s testing, 12V regulation remained within 1.8% across the stated load range, and full-load ripple measured 62 mV against the review’s cited 120 mV ATX limit. The reviewer also reports that the tested protection mechanisms triggered, with over-power protection (OPP) activating at approximately 1005W, or 134% of rated output. These results describe the tested sample and conditions; they do not guarantee identical behavior from every production unit.

The review says the unit’s own 80 PLUS report was slightly more favorable than its measurements. It also reported finding no Cybenetics listing for this model at the time of publication. That is a dated observation, not proof that no listing exists now.

Is the TR-KG750 worth buying at $91?

Tom’s Hardware published its review on 11 September 2026 and listed a US price of $91. That is a dated review-time figure, not a confirmed current price, stock level or seller. Check the exact KG-750/TR-KG750 variant and current listing before deciding; a marketplace result may differ in model, seller or availability.

The value case is strongest if you want a 750W modular supply with a native 12V-2×6 lead and accept the measured noise and narrow efficiency margin at 115 VAC. It is less compelling if quiet full-load operation, more efficiency headroom or operation near the top of the stated temperature range is a priority. Tom’s Hardware summarized its own review verdict this way: “The $91 price and five-year warranty are the argument.” The price in that statement belongs to the review date, not necessarily the current market.

When comparing alternatives, look beyond the 80 PLUS label: compare noise at the loads your system will actually draw, measured efficiency, rated operating temperature, warranty, connector fit and evidence about the platform. Use only modular cables supplied for the exact PSU model; modular PSU cables are not universally interchangeable.
