Yes. A computer with 192GB of usable memory can run many large language models (LLMs) locally, but the exact model and workload matter. The model’s quantized weight files, context length, inference runtime and other memory use all affect whether it fits. A 192GB Apple silicon system shares memory between the CPU and GPU; a conventional PC with 192GB of system RAM and a separate GPU is not equivalent.
What 192GB can—and cannot—tell you
Memory capacity is a useful starting point, not a model-size guarantee. Model weights need memory, but so do the inference runtime, the KV cache used to handle context, the operating system and other applications. Longer context and concurrent work can increase the memory required beyond what the weight files alone suggest.

Apple’s WWDC25 MLX session gives a concrete scale example: a 670-billion-parameter model quantized to 4.5 bits per weight requires about 380GB for weights alone. That example does not fit in 192GB, even before allowing for runtime or context memory. It is an illustration of one model and format—not a universal parameter-count limit. Apple’s MLX session
What “unified memory” means on Apple silicon
For this title, “unified-memory PC” most naturally describes an Apple silicon computer. Apple explains that MLX uses Metal acceleration and unified memory, allowing CPU and GPU operations to work on the same data. That shared pool can be used by supported local-inference software; it does not by itself establish how quickly a particular model will generate text. Apple Developer’s WWDC25 session

Apple’s materials identify a Mac Studio configuration with an M2 Ultra and 192GB of memory. Apple’s later M3 Ultra announcement describes a different chip and memory range: configurations start at 96GB and scale to 512GB. Apple’s claim that M3 Ultra can run models with more than 600 billion parameters directly on device is a manufacturer capability claim about that product family, not proof that the 192GB M2 Ultra configuration can run the same models. How to check whether a particular model fits
- Identify the exact model file. Check the downloaded quantized weights’ actual file size and format rather than choosing by parameter count alone.
- Check runtime compatibility and overhead. Confirm that your chosen inference software supports the model and its format, and leave memory for runtime allocations and the operating system.
- Account for the intended context. The KV cache uses additional memory; a setup that loads a model at a short context may not have enough headroom at a much longer one.
- Test the workload you intend to run. Include the prompt length, generation, concurrent sessions and other applications you expect to keep open. A model loading successfully is not the same as proving the full workload will run comfortably.
For Apple silicon, Apple presents MLX and MLX-LM as options for local inference. Its WWDC25 session demonstrates downloading and quantizing models for on-device use. The right choice still depends on model compatibility and workload, not memory capacity alone. Apple Developer’s MLX session

- Quality Components :High performance Memory RAM upgrade designed for Laptop, Notebook, All-in-One Computers . Fit for (not limited to) Apple, imac ,macbook Pro,Sony, Supermicro, , ASUS, Dell, DFI, Gateway, HP, HP Compaq, Intel, Lenovo, LG Laptop ,notebook.
- Plug and Play: Easy to install ,Memory upgrade is one of the fastest, easiest, and most affordable ways to immediately improve the performance of your computer. If your PC laptop, desktop, or Mac system is running slowly, installing more memory takes as little as five minutes and delivers immediate and lasting improvements.
- Energy Saving: For additional memory for laptops, while ensuring high frequency and high performance, this product successfully limits the operating voltage to 1.35V, which can greatly reduce the power consumption of DDR3 memory. This is a low-voltage memory (1.35V), but it also supports normal voltage (1.5V).
Why capacity does not predict speed
More memory can make it possible to load larger weights or use a longer context, but capacity alone does not tell you time to first token, generation throughput or interactive responsiveness. Those also depend on the chip, runtime, model and workload.

In the authors’ tested settings, MLX had the highest sustained generation throughput; MLC-LLM had lower time to first token for moderate prompts; and llama.cpp was efficient for lightweight single-stream use. The abstract also reports trade-offs for Ollama and constraints for PyTorch MPS on large models and long contexts, and says the Apple silicon systems tested trailed NVIDIA GPU-based vLLM in absolute performance. How this differs from a conventional PC
On a conventional desktop with a discrete GPU, the “192GB RAM” figure generally refers to system memory, not the GPU’s own VRAM. Whether a model can use system memory as well as GPU memory depends on the hardware and inference runtime’s support for placement or offloading; that arrangement should not be treated as equivalent to Apple’s shared-memory design. To assess a conventional PC, check the GPU model and VRAM alongside system RAM, then verify the runtime’s behavior for the specific model.

If you are considering the Mac Studio M2 Ultra 192GB configuration, verify the exact configuration and current availability before buying; Apple’s materials document the configuration, but do not establish its current marketplace stock. Apple’s Mac Studio specifications list storage and unified memory as separate configuration details. An external SSD can hold downloaded model files, but storage space does not add memory available for inference. Apple Mac Studio technical specifications
