Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a laptop webcam appears in Device Manager as “USB Boot” and the Camera app shows a blank preview or an error, Windows has detected something on the camera’s USB connection but has not necessarily initialized a usable video device. The label is not a universal Microsoft diagnosis: it may be a friendly name, fallback driver association, stale device entry, vendor recovery state, or a hardware-initialization failure.
Start with the non-destructive checks—camera controls, permissions, Windows Camera, updates, and the exact OEM driver. Only after those steps should you consider firmware recovery, opening the laptop, or professional repair.

First identify what “USB Boot” refers to
Before changing drivers, establish whether this is an integrated laptop camera or a separately connected USB webcam. The recovery options are different.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the exact laptop or webcam model, Windows 10 or Windows 11 version, and whether the problem followed an update, drop, screen repair, or hinge work.
- In Start → Device Manager, check Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus devices, and Other devices.
- Right-click the entry, open Properties → General, and copy Device status and any error code.
- Under Properties → Details → Hardware Ids, copy every displayed hardware ID. Also note the driver provider, date, and version.
- Select View → Show hidden devices. A hidden duplicate can explain why one entry is stale while another is active.
Microsoft’s current troubleshooting sequence covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it does not define “USB Boot” as one standard camera mode: Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide.

Do the two-minute physical and app checks
Check every camera control
- Open the physical privacy shutter and remove anything covering the lens.
- Turn on a dedicated camera switch, if the laptop has one.
- Press the keyboard camera key or its Fn combination; an on-screen camera-disabled icon may otherwise be easy to miss.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI only if the manufacturer exposes a camera setting, and confirm the camera is enabled.
- For an external webcam, bypass a dock or hub, try another direct USB port, and test a known-good data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry video.
- Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, browser tabs, and other programs that may already hold the camera.
Use Windows Camera as the baseline
- Open Start → Camera.
- Check whether a live preview appears.
- Compare that result with the application where the failure began.
If Windows Camera works but Zoom, Teams, a browser, or another program does not, select the correct camera in that application and review its permissions. That pattern usually points to app selection, privacy settings, or another process using the camera rather than a failed module.
Verify camera privacy permissions
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Camera.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Turn on Let apps access your camera.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera.
- Allow the affected application where an individual-app control is shown.
Windows 10
Use Settings → Privacy → Camera, then enable device access, app access, and desktop-app access. Microsoft explains these controls in its camera permission guidance and camera and microphone privacy overview.
Permissions can block a functioning camera from an application, but they usually do not explain why Device Manager persistently names the hardware “USB Boot.” Continue with driver diagnosis if no normal camera device appears.
Run the Windows troubleshooter and install updates
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and request the camera troubleshooter. Some releases also show Start → Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Camera → Run; menu labels vary by release.

- Choose Restart after installation; closing the lid or waking from sleep is not equivalent.
Windows may reinstall a driver after removal, but that does not guarantee that the driver is the correct OEM package. Use the laptop maker’s support page—not a third-party “driver updater”—and search by the exact model or service tag. Microsoft documents recommended driver delivery at its driver-update page. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so current fixes and vendor support may be more limited on that operating system.
Inspect, roll back, or reinstall the camera device
Capture the current state
In Device Manager, record the device name, category, manufacturer, hardware IDs, driver details, and status code before deleting anything. Cameras can appear under different categories depending on the driver.
If the device is missing, select Action → Scan for hardware changes. Do not delete every USB controller or chipset device; work only on the camera-related entry.
Roll back after a recent update
- Right-click the camera or “USB Boot” entry.
- Select Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, if the button is available.
- Restart and test in Windows Camera.
Rollback is unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver retained. It is most useful when the failure began immediately after a Windows or driver update.

Uninstall and rediscover
- Create a restore point or confirm that Windows recovery options are available.
- Right-click the relevant camera entry and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver, select that option only for the camera entry.
- Restart the computer.
- If necessary, return to Device Manager and select Action → Scan for hardware changes.
- Test again in Windows Camera.
These steps follow Microsoft’s supported camera recovery process: camera driver removal and rediscovery guidance.
Use the Microsoft UVC driver only for a compatible external webcam
For a standard external UVC webcam, Microsoft supports trying its built-in driver:
- In Device Manager, right-click the webcam and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers.
- Choose USB Video Device, restart, and test.
This can restore video but may remove Windows Hello, infrared support, vendor controls, or image-tuning features. Do not treat it as the default fix for an integrated laptop camera labeled “USB Boot”; internal modules may require a model-specific Realtek or other OEM package. The supported option is described by Microsoft.
Install the exact laptop manufacturer package
Search the manufacturer’s support portal with the full model, submodel, serial number, or service tag. Look for these packages in order:

A Realtek hardware ID is not enough to justify a generic Realtek download. Community cases associate USBVID_0BDA&PID_5841 with a Realtek camera and describe older-driver experiments, but those reports are model-specific: BleepingComputer case, Microsoft Q&A case, and Acer community discussion.
What the common error codes suggest
| Error | Meaning or direction |
|---|---|
0xA00F4244 |
Camera not detected; inspect enumeration, connection, and drivers. |
0xA00F4246 |
Camera may be locked by security software. |
0x800705AA |
Insufficient system resources. |
0xA00F4294 |
Video start failed. |
0x80070490 or 0x80004005 |
Device-detection, registry, or hardware-related failure is possible. |
0xA00F4271<MediaCaptureFailedEvent> |
Reported anecdotally in cases where the device was named “USB Boot”; it is not proof of one universal cause. |
Microsoft’s camera guidance and its camera-not-detected error page cover the standard Windows codes. The “USB Boot” association for 0xA00F4271 comes from user reports, not a general Microsoft definition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen hardware becomes the leading explanation
Arrange manufacturer diagnostics or repair when the entry remains “USB Boot” after driver removal and OEM reinstallation, never becomes a normal video device, and fails in Windows Camera and every application. Hardware is especially suspect when:
Best Value
- The problem began after a drop, screen replacement, hinge damage, or display repair.
- The camera works or disappears as the lid angle changes.
- The microphone or IR camera failed at the same time.
- The device repeatedly vanishes and reappears or shows a persistent Device Manager error.
- A clean software recovery made no difference.
Possible faults include a loose or torn display-camera ribbon, damaged connector, failed camera module, USB power or embedded-controller fault, motherboard damage, or camera firmware requiring a vendor-specific recovery. “USB Boot” alone does not prove any one of these.
Should you open the laptop?
Do not open it while under warranty, after a recent repair, or without a model-specific service guide and appropriate repair experience. The original repair provider can often correct a loose connector without risking the bezel.
If you proceed, shut down completely, disconnect power and peripherals, disconnect the internal battery where the service manual requires it, and use ESD precautions. Photograph connector orientation, never force a ribbon latch, and inspect for a torn flex cable, bent pins, corrosion, or an unlocked connector. A reseat is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed repair.
Firmware recovery is a model-specific last software step
No universal firmware-reflash command or utility exists for the generic label “USB Boot.” Use only the exact manufacturer’s tool and instructions for the exact laptop and camera module. Keep stable power connected, back up important data, never interrupt the update, and never substitute firmware from a similar model. Avoid random “USB boot camera” utilities.
Use this stopping point
Stop repeating driver reinstalls when the same identity returns after reboot, the device never becomes a normal camera, Windows Camera still fails, or the problem followed physical work or impact. At that point, registry cleaners, generic driver sites, and a factory reset are unlikely to repair a disconnected cable, failed module, or incompatible firmware. A Windows reinstall is particularly disruptive and cannot fix physical damage.
Quick Recap
Symptom-to-action checklist
| Observation | Likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Camera works in Windows Camera but not Zoom or Teams | Application selection or permission | Choose the camera in the app and enable desktop-app access. |
| Camera is disabled in Device Manager | Software setting | Enable the device and restart. |
| Failure followed an update | Driver regression | Roll back, then install the OEM package. |
| External camera changes with cable or port | Cable, port, hub, or power | Use a known-good data cable and direct USB port. |
| Internal camera failed after screen repair or a drop | Ribbon or module damage | Use warranty or professional inspection before more driver changes. |
| Generic UVC driver restores video but removes features | Compatibility trade-off | Use it temporarily or reinstall the OEM driver for full functionality. |
