Light does not enter a camera as an upright picture. Rays from the scene cross as they pass through the aperture and form an inverted image on the physical sensor: the scene’s top lands at the bottom, and its left lands at the right. The camera’s final photo can still appear upright because the recorded image is displayed in the expected orientation.
How light forms an inverted image
Imagine a dark box with a tiny hole in one side. Light travels in straight lines through the opening. A ray from the top of an object crosses the hole and reaches the lower part of the opposite wall; a ray from the bottom reaches the upper part. The wall therefore receives a real, inverted projection.

Each point in a scene sends light in many directions, but the small opening restricts which rays can reach each point on the image surface. Rays from opposite sides cross at the aperture. The same geometry explains perspective: farther objects project as smaller, while focal length and the position of the image plane determine how much of the scene fits in the frame.

A camera lens gathers and focuses more light than a pinhole, but it retains this basic image-forming geometry. At the physical image plane behind the lens, the projection is upside down and reversed left-to-right.

What “inverted” means in a camera
In a basic pinhole projection, the top of the scene maps to the bottom of the image plane, and the left maps to the right. Those two reversals together amount to a 180-degree rotation. Calling the image merely “backward” can be confusing, since that word may suggest a mirror reflection; describing which sides swap is clearer.
Why the photo on a screen is upright
The inverted projection is an optical image formed at the sensor, not a requirement that the saved or displayed photograph look upside down. A camera’s imaging and display pipeline can present the recorded scene in an upright orientation. The final view is therefore not a direct indication of how rays landed on the sensor.

Some optics diagrams can also appear to show an upright image because they use a virtual image plane in front of the pinhole. No light lands on that imaginary plane: it is a coordinate convention that preserves an upright scene representation for calculations. The physical sensor remains behind the aperture, where the image is inverted.
How mirrors change the viewing path
A mirror redirects light, so the orientation seen by an observer depends on the mirror’s position and the rest of the optical path. In a camera obscura arrangement described by the Oxford History of Science Museum, a lens forms the projection and a mirror set at 45 degrees reflects it onto a horizontal sheet of paper. That arrangement gives an image that is right way up but remains reversed left-to-right.

A single-lens reflex camera provides another example of redirected light. In its viewfinder path, light passes through the lens, reflects off a movable mirror angled at 45 degrees, and then passes through a prism to the viewfinder. When the shutter is released, the mirror moves so the sensor can be exposed. This is one camera design, not a description of every camera.

| Setup | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pinhole | Restricts the rays reaching the image surface, making the inverted projection easy to demonstrate. | It admits little light. A hole that is too large blurs the image; making it smaller can sharpen the projection but reduces the light reaching it. |
| Lens | Gathers and focuses light onto a recording surface while retaining the basic inverted-image geometry. | A lens allows a larger aperture and a brighter, higher-quality image than a pinhole setup. |
Brightness, sharpness, and exposure depend on the device and conditions. There is no single aperture size or exposure time that applies to every pinhole or camera.

A simple way to picture the effect
- Picture a dark box. Place a small opening in one wall and an object outside it.
- Trace two rays. Draw one from the object’s top through the opening to the lower wall, and one from its bottom through the opening to the upper wall.
- Notice the crossing. The projection on the opposite wall is upside down and reversed left-to-right.
- Add a lens or mirror. A lens focuses the light; a mirror redirects its path. Neither makes every camera’s viewing arrangement identical.
