Collateral is a 5v5, single-life multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites. Players start with pistols, earn in-match cash through eliminations and objective play, then spend it on upgrades between rounds. A death costs you your loadout, but your cash carries forward.
Activision describes Collateral as a mode based on Search and Destroy, with an added round-to-round economy. These are announced rules, not independently tested live-game behavior; the publisher said more mode details would follow closer to launch.

How Collateral works
Each round pits two teams of five against one another. One side attacks the bomb sites while the other defends them, and the teams alternate roles. Its Search and Destroy foundation means the focus is on the objective and surviving the round rather than returning after a respawn.

Cash, deaths, and between-round purchases
Everyone begins with a pistol. Eliminations and playing the objective earn in-match cash, which players can use to buy upgrades between rounds. The announced rules make death costly: you lose your loadout, while your earned money carries between rounds. In the publisher’s words, “every dollar counts and every decision matters.”
Custom loadouts are disabled, so the announced purchase menu is the way to add equipment, perks, and stronger weapons as the match progresses. Activision has listed these choices:

How it differs from Search and Destroy
Collateral shares Search and Destroy’s tactical attack-and-defense structure, but adds cash earned through kills and objective play, plus purchases between rounds. That economy and the loss of a player’s loadout on death are the key announced differences. The available announcement does not establish how those changes affect balance, match length, or competitive play.

Release information in the announcement
Activision’s September 29, 2026 announcement gave October 23, 2026 as the full-game release date and October 16 as the start of campaign early access for eligible digital preorders or prepurchases. Those are the dates stated in that announcement; it does not independently confirm later schedule changes or regional availability. Further Collateral details were expected closer to launch.
