Caddy vs Nginx: Choose the Right Reverse Proxy for Your Setup

Caddy automates hostname-based HTTPS when public DNS and port access are in place. Nginx may suit existing teams and deployments that depend on its documented proxy-cache controls. Neither is a universal speed winner.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Caddy if you want hostname-based HTTPS certificates and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects managed automatically, and your public server can be reached on ports 80 and 443. Choose Nginx if your team already operates it, needs its documented proxy-cache controls, or prefers its explicit certificate and proxy configuration. Both can reverse proxy requests and distribute traffic; the official documentation cited here does not establish a universal performance winner.

How to decide between Caddy and Nginx

For a new, straightforward public service, Caddy is often the simpler operational fit when automatic HTTPS is the priority. For an organization already running Nginx, or a deployment whose cache policy and detailed proxy controls are central, Nginx may fit better. If throughput, latency, traffic patterns, or platform constraints are decisive, test both with a representative workload rather than choosing on a general speed claim.

Decision area Caddy Nginx
Public HTTPS Automatic HTTPS is enabled for configured hostnames, including managed certificates and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects. Public issuance depends on DNS and external reachability. Caddy HTTPS quick-start Configure HTTPS with certificate and key files using the SSL module. The documented setup is explicit; module availability depends on how Nginx was built. Nginx HTTPS configuration
Reverse proxy The Caddyfile reverse_proxy directive documents multiple upstreams, load-balancing policies, retries, health checks, and transport options. Caddy reverse_proxy proxy_pass and related directives control upstream communication, request and response handling, buffering, TLS verification, and caching. Nginx proxy module
Load balancing Supports multiple upstreams and documented policies, with active and passive health checks. Caddy reverse_proxy Upstream groups distribute traffic; round-robin is the default when no method is configured. The guide also covers HTTP, HTTPS, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI, memcached, and gRPC proxying. Nginx load balancing guide
Proxy caching The cited reverse-proxy reference does not establish a directly equivalent general-purpose proxy cache feature. Confirm that any required cache behavior is available in the exact Caddy configuration or modules you intend to use. The proxy module documents cache zones, keys, validity rules, bypass, stale responses, and background updates. Some directives are identified as commercial-subscription functionality; check the specific directive and your deployment before relying on it. Nginx proxy module
Operational fit A likely fit when the team values hostname-based certificate automation and Caddyfile configuration. A likely fit when the team already maintains Nginx configuration or depends on its documented modules and cache controls.

This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a claim that either proxy is categorically faster or more secure in every configuration. Both documentation sets are live and version-sensitive.

What Caddy automates for public HTTPS

When a site is configured with a hostname, Caddy documents automatic certificate provisioning and renewal, as well as HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects. For public certificate issuance, the hostname must resolve to the server and the server must be reachable externally on ports 80 and 443. If your network or hosting setup cannot meet those conditions, you need a different, explicitly configured certificate-validation approach. Caddy HTTPS quick-start

What Nginx makes explicit

Nginx’s documented HTTPS setup uses certificate and key files. Its HTTP SSL module requires OpenSSL and must be enabled at build time; the exact available capabilities therefore depend on the Nginx build as well as its version. Nginx HTTPS configuration

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For proxying, Nginx documents controls for upstream communication, headers, response buffering, cache behavior, and upstream TLS verification. Those options give operators detailed control, but the configuration and certificate lifecycle are more explicit than Caddy’s hostname-based automatic HTTPS workflow. Check the reference for the deployed version, and verify module and subscription requirements for any directive your design depends on. Nginx proxy module

How the proxy and load-balancing features differ

Caddy: multiple upstreams and health checks

Caddy’s reverse_proxy directive supports multiple upstreams, load-balancing policies, retries, health checks, and transport customization. That provides the building blocks for distributing requests and responding to upstream availability, while keeping proxy configuration in the Caddyfile. Consult the directive reference for the precise policy and health-check behavior you need. Caddy reverse_proxy

Nginx: upstream groups and a broad proxy module

Nginx documents upstream server groups and uses round-robin by default when no load-balancing method is configured. Its load-balancing guide covers proxying across several protocols, including HTTP, HTTPS, FastCGI, uwsgi, SCGI, memcached, and gRPC. These capabilities can make Nginx a natural choice when a deployment already relies on its configuration model or related modules. Nginx load balancing guide

Choose caching based on the exact directive

If proxy caching is a requirement, Nginx’s documentation gives you specific controls for cache zones, cache keys, validity, bypass, stale content, and background updates. Do not assume every documented directive is available under identical terms in every Nginx deployment: the reference marks some features as requiring a commercial subscription. For Caddy, the cited reverse-proxy page does not establish an equivalent general-purpose proxy cache, so validate the specific implementation before making it a deciding requirement. Configuration details that can change the outcome

Caddy proxying to an HTTPS upstream

Caddy can connect to an HTTPS upstream by specifying an HTTPS scheme. Since Caddy v2.11.0, it automatically sets the Host header to match the HTTPS upstream host; earlier versions may require explicit handling. Check the version in use when configuring this case. Disabling upstream certificate verification removes security checks and should not be used as a production shortcut. Caddy reverse_proxy

Is Caddy or Nginx faster?

The official documentation cited here describes configuration and capabilities; it is not a controlled head-to-head performance benchmark. It does not establish a universal winner for throughput or latency. Results can depend on workload, connection patterns, TLS, caching, upstream behavior, configuration, and platform.

If performance is a deciding factor, test both in a staging environment that reflects your real traffic and configuration. Measure the outcomes that matter to your service, such as latency and throughput under representative load, and include the TLS, caching, and upstream behavior you expect to run in production.

Choose based on your deployment

  • Choose Caddy for a small or straightforward public service when automated certificate management and redirects are valuable, and DNS plus external access to ports 80 and 443 are available.
  • Choose Nginx when your team already operates it, relies on its established configuration or modules, or needs its documented proxy-cache controls.
  • Evaluate both when performance, traffic shape, upstream TLS, caching policy, observability, or platform limits matter more than configuration preference. Use a representative staging test rather than inferring a speed winner from feature documentation.
  • Check exact versions and builds before deployment, particularly for Nginx module availability and directive behavior, and Caddy’s HTTPS-upstream Host handling introduced in v2.11.0.
