CachyOS can make an Arch-based desktop easier to get started with: its graphical installer guides you through choices such as desktop environment and packages, rather than requiring you to assemble every part of a system by hand. But installation still involves consequential decisions—especially disk partitioning—and CachyOS remains a rolling-release system that needs ongoing maintenance.
That combination can make CachyOS a useful way to explore the Arch ecosystem: begin with a working desktop, then learn how its choices fit together. It is not a risk-free shortcut, and the project’s optimization claims should be understood as design goals, not a guarantee that every task will run faster.

What CachyOS changes about getting started with Arch
CachyOS describes its desktop edition as an optimized Arch Linux desktop, with CPU-specific package builds and a tuned kernel. The practical difference for a newcomer is less about a promise of speed and more about the starting point: a graphical installer offers guided decisions about the desktop and package set, so you can reach a usable system without manually assembling every component.
The project says its online desktop installer offers more than 17 desktop environments. Choices include KDE Plasma, GNOME, COSMIC, Hyprland, Niri, Sway, i3, and XFCE. The variety is useful, but it also means you should choose deliberately: a desktop environment affects the way the system looks and works, while window managers such as i3 or Sway generally offer a more hands-on experience.

A preconfigured system can make it easier to explore Arch-family package management and configuration after installation. That is a learning route, not a claim that CachyOS reproduces every step of a manual Arch setup.
CachyOS vs Arch Linux: what you trade
| Question | CachyOS | A manual Arch install |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | A graphical installer guides choices such as environment and packages. | Lets you assemble and configure more of the system directly. |
| Configuration control | Guided defaults and presets reduce the number of decisions needed at the outset. | Offers direct control over more setup decisions, with more work for the installer. |
| Package tooling | Uses optimized package repositories and a CachyOS fork of pacman with additional features, including installed-from tracking and automatic architecture detection. | Uses standard Arch workflows; CachyOS-specific tooling may raise compatibility warnings in those workflows. |
| Maintenance | An Arch-related rolling system that still requires updates and troubleshooting. | Also a rolling system that requires updates and troubleshooting. |
CachyOS says its setup script detects CPU architecture support to configure repository tiers. Its project documentation also describes an option that uses optimized package repositories without the CachyOS repository and custom pacman. These are meaningful differences for users who care about package compatibility and system configuration, but they do not establish that every program or workload will be faster. The official material cited here provides no controlled benchmark comparison.

What the CachyOS installation asks you to do
The official desktop guide walks through a graphical flow, but it does not remove the need to understand the choices that affect your computer. The broad sequence is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Boot the CachyOS installation image from a bootable USB.
- Set language, region, and keyboard options.
- Choose a boot manager and desktop environment.
- Select packages and set account credentials.
- Review the summary carefully, then install.
Partitioning deserves particular attention. The CachyOS Wiki’s desktop/laptop guide, last updated May 20, 2026, says: “Manual partitioning is strongly preferred when installing CachyOS.” It cautions that the installer’s “Install alongside” and “Replace partition” options can fail.

In its illustrated manual layouts, the guide gives root a minimum of 20,000 MiB and provides UEFI boot-partition guidance that depends on the selected boot manager. These are not universal partition instructions: the right layout depends on your existing disk arrangement and boot configuration. Before changing partitions, back up important files and verify the disk and partition names shown in the installer. If you cannot confidently identify the correct target, stop rather than guessing.
Installing CachyOS alongside Windows
Dual-booting adds preparation and recovery risks. The CachyOS guide warns: “Dual booting Windows and Linux is not 100% reliable.” In particular, Windows updates can overwrite EFI boot files, potentially changing which operating system starts. Using separate drives is one way the guide suggests avoiding that issue, though it is not a guarantee against every dual-boot problem.

Before beginning, the guide calls for these prerequisites:
Recommended Free Tools
- Disable Windows Fast Startup and hibernation.
- Disable BitLocker and Secure Boot.
- Reserve an empty partition of at least 30 GiB.
- Prepare a bootable CachyOS USB.
- Back up important data and confirm exactly which disk and partitions you intend to modify.
Because “Install alongside” is not fully reliable according to the guide, do not treat it as a substitute for understanding the disk layout. Read the current installation instructions before proceeding, particularly if Windows and CachyOS will share a drive.

Do the optimization claims mean CachyOS will be faster?
Not necessarily. CachyOS’s project materials describe CPU-specific packages, optimized repositories, and a tuned kernel. Those explain how the project is designed; they do not establish a universal performance advantage or quantify one. Results can depend on the processor, software, workload, and configuration. Choose CachyOS for its installation approach and system options if those suit you, rather than relying on an unstated speed gain.
Which CachyOS edition fits your device?
Desktop Edition
The Desktop Edition is the general desktop and laptop option, with the online installer’s broad environment selection. CachyOS’s download page is the place to check the current ISO and edition details; images and releases can change.
Handheld Edition
CachyOS lists a separate Handheld Edition with a GameMode-like experience and gaming tools installed. Its download page lists the ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and LCD, Legion Go, and Lenovo Legion Go S as supported devices, and says the current handheld environment is KDE Plasma. Check the live compatibility information for your exact model before installing; a listed device does not establish that every revision or accessory behaves identically.

CachyOS is not a way to avoid the maintenance associated with a rolling-release system. You will still need to apply updates and may need to troubleshoot changes. Its August 2026 release notes say existing users need no manual change beyond the usual update command, sudo pacman -Syu. That is release-specific guidance; consult the current release notes if upgrading from an older system.
For a new installation, use the live CachyOS download page rather than relying on an older ISO reference. The project’s August 2026 release notes identify a desktop ISO dated 2026-08-09 and describe installer fixes and refactoring, desktop changes, and improved handheld detection.
